I went into this score figuring it would be all dissonance and noises to make the audience in the theater jump. Was I ever surprised! This is a wonderfully lyrical score that anyone who likes Basic Instinct or The Hollow Man would absolutely love. There are parts that remind me of The Mummy and Psycho 2.

Thoughts?

I like the score too, though I always thought the use of electronics sort of "cheapened" the carousel theme.
I guess I feel that way about a lot of Goldsmith's use of synths over the years, though.

Thought it was interesting to read that Goldsmith apparently recycled his unused "Poltergeist III" material for "The Haunting."

I really like the score too... THE HAUNTING was released the same year as his much more famous MUMMY score. I think it got lost in the shuffle. A shame. THE HAUNTING is quite good and very powerful at times.

Hopefully this is on the Varese Expanded to-do list if there is a large amount of unreleased music.

I hope so too!

About 28 minutes unreleased score (as heard in film)...

That's a myth that needs to die. There is absolutely no evidence to back that up. Goldsmith was never even considered to score Poltergeist 3. They simply couldn't afford him and he was never approached.

I have a feeling we'll either get it this Halloween, or we'll get The Final Conflict: Super Mecha Epic Edition with a newly added 29-second cue.
