It is a sad day, a beloved fine film composer has passed on, MR Marvin Hamlisch who has given us dozens of film scores, no less one of the most popular broadway plays ever A CHORUS LINE. what is your top 5 favorite scores of MR Hamlisch?

Love the sequence at 3:00

One of the best songs ever.

- The Mirror has two faces (highly underrated score)
- The Spy who loved me
- The Swimmer
- Sophie's Choice
- The Way we were

His contribution to the Olympic Games in 1984 (opening sequence) was also very spectacular.

The Sting and A Chorus Line are two favorites independent of composer. The Way We Were is one of my favorite songs.

If you really want to get inside Hamlisch's head regarding his approach to music, listen to the cast recording for Neil Simon's "They're Playing Our Song."

[edit]It looks as if he finished the music for Soderbergh's Liberace movie.

To Maleficio- I always found it strange years ago as well. why such a popular composer like MR Hamlisch was in the 70's and all, a bunch of his film scores didn't get put on Lp. like the following-Kotch-70-War between men and women-72-Prisoner of second ave-75-Same time next year-78-Starting over-79-Seems like old times-80-Devil and max devlin-81-I ought to be in pictures-82-Romantic comedy-83- etc etc

Of course the fairly short score for I Ought to be in Pictures was released several years back by Intrada paired with Shire's Max Dugan Returns.

1. The Swimmer
2. Take the Money and Run
3. Bananas
4. The Way We Were
5. The Informant!

All of these are amazing. I adored him.

There are several earlier ones that I haven't heard that are probably good but remain unreleased - "Move," "Kotch," "The War Between Men and Women" - and most of his eighties and early nineties output hasn't seen a release either.

Take The Money And Run looks like a firm fave here.
Has it been released on CD?
What's so great about it?

No, "Take The Money And Run" has never been released to my knowledge.
Neither has another Hamlisch Masterpiece "Kotch"
One day perhaps....
