I just wanted to take a moment to thank Ford and all those involved with making this absolutely stellar box set back in 1999. I was able to grab one on eBay last week and I've been in Twilight Zone-heaven ever since.
Personal favorites include:
WALKING DISTANCE (duh) THE LONELY THE OUTER-SPACE SUITE THE INVADERS (classic Goldsmith)
This set is pure gold, and is a nice overview of music from the series. I have the McNeely re-recording and it's definitely handy for EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, LITTLE GIRL LOST, and LIVING DOLL, but the 40th Anniversary set takes the cake. The sound is crystal-clear, gorgeous and you can hear every bit of the orchestration.
And the best surprise? Fred Steiner's THE PASSERBY. It's absolutely beautiful and has quickly become one of my favorite TZ scores.

Totally agree - I love this set - picked it up when it first came out.
Between this set and the isolated scores on my Blu Ray sets, I'm quite happy...:-)
I've had this for many years. I had no idea it was as pricey as it is.
My favorite overall disc is the Nathan Van Cleave disc. It is solid except for the source music in "Willoughby."
The Jerry disc is very good except for that damned harmonica in a couple of the shows. The two jazz tracks, Nervous Man, and the one about the giant woman are my favorites.
The Herrmann disc is for the most part great, especially "Where is Everybody," which has some of the show's most iconic music. I don't care for the "Outer Space Suite" too much.
Disc 4 is a real mixed bag. The source music on a few of the shows really gets in the way; I wish it were individually indexed; source music and underscore have no business being indexed in the same track.
Finally, I wish someone would issue the full Marius Constant pieces from which the theme was edited. I've wondered if they are in the CBS library.
The more I listen to this music, the more I feel that the composers somehow tapped into the psyche of the era.
If I recall correctly, Mr. Kimmel was involved in the release of the original Varese LPs, so he probably deserves a big "thank you" in addition to Mr. Thaxton.
All of the Twilight Zone scores are pretty much masterclasses in effective scoring for small ensembles, which I love. The instrumentation for THE LONELY is: 2 vibraphones, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, Hammond Organ, 2 harps, and 1 glock. Fantastic stuff.
Great release. I had all the original Varese LPs. My favorites (of course) are THE INVADERS (Goldsmith) Back There (Goldsmith) Walking Distance (Herrmann) and THE 16 MILIMETER SHRINE (Waxman).

Now, we need THRILLER!
I still have my original Varese LPs for TZ...and yes, bring on THRILLER!!!...:-)
Did the Silva 40th collection make the Varese CDs obsolete, or is there still music on the Varese CDs that didn't make it to the 40th? (And when I use the word obsolete, I only mean from the content perspective. They were among the first soundtrack LPs I bought and played them over and over again.)

The 40th set covers EVERYTHING and then some - I just like to hold on to the LPs...they are just plain cool to look at!...:-)

Hit me again, bartender! a double Thriller without ice! Pour the Goldsmith-Stevens cocktail and then add a Rugolo olive to finish!

I got the Silva set for a very good price - I think online from Amazon or some such a number of years ago (may even have been in a bricks and mortar HMV) and I haven't played it for years. Will have to do so now.
I wanted to get the complete original TZ DVD set but it's been pirated and even Amazon are selling it (well, third party sellers), so couldn't risk it, you don't know if you're buying legit or otherwise. The TZ CD set was manageable cost wise (about £20 or so), whereas if it had been as much as the impending La La release of Trek, I would not have done so.

If only it still was (about £20 or so). It's a lot more
