this would be a wonderful project if it ever came to fruition because i consider it one of tiomkin's best. i already have the forty three minute cd from capitol records and i was wondering how much more music there is that has not been included to have the full score available. could the next 2 cd release from fsm be GIANT? if it isn't, would any of the other labels (la la land, kritzerland, intrada) take up this worthwhile effort? thanks to anyone for any information.

I think it would be tough, as Capitol still owns soundtrack album rights, and they already licensed those out to DRG.

I admit that I had no clue what GIANT was, at first I though you were referring to the Iron Giant till I looked it up on IMDB.

Don't think I ever saw the movie.

.....in an elegant slipcase, embossed with a map of Texas.....and containing a double-cd set, a fascinating booklet about the score and film, and a small vial of genuine crude oil. smile

My favorite Tiompkin score. Lots of great memories with this film and many years ago of when I was discovering the great Jimmy Dean.

I have the DRG release. This is a score that definitely needs to be remastered. If LLL is doing it I will be first in line. They did a fine job on Fall of the Roman Empire.

I think I've read that the Capitol Records version is a re-recording conducted by Tiomkin. If so, I wonder if the original tracks survive in stereo. We often read about Warner's practice of mixing the stereo tracks to mono for storage (e.g., LAND OF THE PHAROAHS) and then erasing the fullcoat multitrack tapes for re-use.

That is very incredible news.

I agree w DMD regarding the Tiomkin Americana / Big Sky sound; it's always made me pay attention. And in that same respect, I have been thoroughly amazed for years at Tiomkin's Jett Rink music for James Dean; it's not that it's excellent music - it's pretty straight forward. Yet it tugs at the strings of your heart - the music is Jett Rink, and all the aspirations that go w it.

Here is a link w JoeC and BobD answering some of my questions about Giant's music.

Thanks for the link where they talk about the music. Still hits me in the gut that the WB got rid of the stereo tracks or what ever years ago. Hearing that stuff just makes me sick.

ALL of LLL's releases have been incredible and they put a lot of hard work into each project so I know for a fact, if they do take on this monumental release it will be a home run.

I'd be interested in seeing complete versions of the two scores Leonard Rosenman did for Dean (East of Eden and Rebel Without A Cause). This could be a two-disc set with part of the liner notes devoted to the working relationship between Dean and Rosenman (Dean was a student of Rosenman's).

so, from what la la land is saying that 'anything is possible', can one infer that they are working on this project and an announcement will be forhcoming soon or can anyone draw any other interpretation from this statement?

It would be great to hear this on CD. My understanding is that the complete music tracks were transferred from the mags in about 1991 and preserved to DAT.

Cheers
Chris
