I also like the liner notes, by the much-maligned Julie Kirgo. Probably the best I've read by her.
They're well-written, offer good historical details and fun facts and are embellished by lovely artwork and design.
Credit where it's due.

Mutant's thread revival has compelled me to grab my CD copies of this score (the original Mainstream issue, c/w Trouble With Angels), the FSM edition and this LLL one.
While I gave Julie Kirgo's liner notes a thumbs up, when compared to Jeff Bond's track by track analysis for the FSM, they're second best. And the FSM sounds different at times, sometimes not better or worse, just different. So, if you're a fan, you have to keep that one too.
BUT!!
It gets worse.
The old Mainstream edition is the only one with the Goldsmith song I Will Follow on it AND, although that recording also sounds different (to put it mildly), it's the only version which recalls the old LP (and it has the original album liner notes and such). Plus, there's a little snare/drum run (which is repeated) around the 2 minute mark of Get Out Of Town, which is really only evident (or more up front) on the Mainstream release. And since that's the version I grew up with, all those years ago in my bedroom, I also love/need to hear that too.
So, if you're a big fan of the film, or JG, I think you need to keep ALL 3 editions!!
And to think some people here doubt my love of Jerry Goldsmith music!! wink

And thanks to the Mainstream edition, I've just heard JG's Hoosiers theme in Future Plans from Trouble With Angels (again...I'd forgotten about it) smile

Kev: If the Mainstream album recording is your go-to audio, were you aware of the superb 2015 Intrada remaster, which was paired with Malcolm Arnold's THE HEROES OF TELEMARK? It's OOP at Intrada's website now, but you may be able to find it elsewhere. (Music Box Records has it, as does Intrada's Amazon store, apparently.) Here's Doug's description from the time:

Stagecoach re-recording, oft-reissued, finally arrives on CD for first time from newly-discovered actual 1" recording session tapes made in January 1966 when Jerry Goldsmith re-recorded virtually all of his score for classic Mainstream album, save final bars of closing song "Stagecoach To Cheyenne" (sung in film by Wayne Newton, on album by The Bill Brown Singers). All previous releases (including actual OST versions) have been compromised in their mixes. Finally, hear all of Goldsmith's incredible detail as it was meant to be heard, from gentle marimba rolls behind solo guitar ("The First Born") to dazzling array of banjos, bass harmonica, percussion ("Escape Route"), from crisp muted trumpet with orchestra ("The Aftermath") and staccato xylophone figures ("A New Passenger And The Reward') to soft harmonica counter-melody above delicate guitar ("All Is Forgiven"). This is Stagecoach at last heard as never before! Spotlight goes to "Family History", one of legendary composer's most gentle, moving cues of all time. Interesting final detail: all previous reissues have odd edit that repeats half of "A New Passenger" for second time, then just stops. Having session master allows us to correct anomaly at last. Gordon Douglas directs Fox 1966 remake of classic 1939 John Ford/John Wayne western with large cast including Ann-Margret, Bing Crosby, Red Buttons, Van Heflin, many others. Flipper cover art designed by Joe Sikoryak offers beautiful reproductions of both original album covers. Informative notes on both productions by John Takis complete exciting package.

Both the LLL and the Intrada are essential, in my book!

No, John, I either totally missed that one, or completely forgot about it!! Duh.
Looks like I'm gonna have to go-a-huntin', if it's a big upgrade to the Mainstream CD.
Imagine how LOUD those snares will sound in that issue.
Cheers mate, looks like I'm off to spend some money...AGAIN...on this baby!

More nice shooting Wedge.
Thanks to your reminder, I managed to pick up a copy of the Intrada Stagecoach LP reissue from Vasco Cine for a reasonable price (15 euro...obviously bought some other goodies too).
It sure does sound great. Much, much better than all previous incarnations.
And, I was unfamiliar with the Heroes Of Telemark score, which is also might fine.
A great and instantly memorable Main Theme, nice Love Theme and some solid WWII action and suspense scoring.
So, Happy Days at chez McGann.
Thanks again! smile
