CHARADE

Label: Intrada MAF 7121
Date: 1963
Tracks: 28
Time = 77:53

In celebration of Universal's 100th Anniversary, Intrada proudly presents world premiere release of famous Henry Mancini soundtrack to legendary Stanley Donen romantic thriller in Hitchcock vein, starring handsome Cary Grant, vulnerable Audrey Hepburn, would-be agent Walter Matthau plus baddies George Kennedy and James Coburn. Mancini anchors with justifiably famous rhythmic main theme in triple meter, then follows with haunting variants, romantic ideas, splendid source cues, jazz and - in particular - early examples of trademark dramatic writing with sliding string figures, sustained suspense lines and dissonant brass clusters for effect. Musical highlights are many: grim hook fight scene on rooftops, exciting Metro chase sequences, tuneful opening ski run source numbers for France locales. Special nod to tender, saddened piano & string version of main theme when Hepburn returns from identifiying her slain husband, then finds her room completely empty. Scene sets stage for one of the most sophisticated thrillers of the sixties, Mancini punctuates it all the way to final twist! Complete 77-minute soundtrack presented from original scoring session elements made in London, all courtesy of both Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures. Mancini re-recorded brief highlights for RCA label in 1963, sadly left off all tender & haunting variants of main theme plus - incredibly - virtually all dramatic scoring. Now, alongside that admittedly famous album, enjoy at last the complete 77-minute soundtrack. Alongside new release of Hatari, this Intrada CD is important debut of an original soundtrack from Mancini's most famous era (Breakfast At Tiffany's, Hatari, Charade, Experiment In Terror, The Pink Panther) as all Mancini albums from the period were re-arranged and re-recorded 30-minute programs with emphasis on dance mood. Intrada is happy to remedy oversight on one of Mancini's greatest! Henry Mancini conducts.

I remember an interview with Doug Fake that must have been fifteen years ago, if not more, in which he said that releasing the actual dramatic scores for Mancini projects like "Charade" would be a dream come true. He finally did it!

I hope that this means that Breakfast At Tiffany's, Experiment in Terror and The Pink Panther are all forthcoming... A Shot in the Dark, The Great Race, Arabesque, Two For The Road as well. Doug's dreams are our dreams.

Yay!
The LP was one of the first soundtracks I ever listened to..found in in the attic in my dad's record collection. Love that main theme!

Is this limited? I want to bundle this with lalaland's Star Trek next month....

I'm listening to the sample clips as I type and, basically, to hell with the money, because I have to get this. It's the underscore I've been wanting for years rather than the happy source music. Absolutely thrilled about this.

Doesn't look like it's limited either - it's a MAF serial number, but I really don't want to wait too long.

Excellent release.

The cut called "Positive Identification" makes me wonder if James Horner didn't find a little inspiration from it for his Katra Ritual cue in "Star Trek III." Those ascending strings and gong sound familiar.

Hi all,
I've been lurking in the darkness on the forum for many, many years, content with just reading and enjoying all the opinions, discussions and announcements. But as this release is my holiest of grails, I just have to share my pure joy and excitement.
Thank you so much Intrada... and hello to all!

Hopefully plenty of rare Mancini on the horizon.

UN

BE

LIEVABLE

My favorite film ever.

An album I NEVER thought I'd see.

I am speechless.

I have dreamt of listening to "Metro Chase" and "Son of Metro Chase" on their own for literal years, ever since I found a list of cues online around 1998.

Cannot WAIT to receive this disc. Up there with BLACK SUNDAY, as a grail for me.

Congrats on your grail release. Mine was Body Double that Intrada released several years ago.

Thank you Intrada!

Ordered. Mancini was one of my favorite composers and still is. This and Hatari are stunningly great releases.
