A while back there was a discussion about re-recorded themes. cdconnection.com has a CD with 29 tracks culled from United Artists albums from the 60's titled "Great Motion Picture Themes". Some tracks are from the original soundtracks , some re-recorded (like "Exodus" by Ferrante & Teicher). A welcome find.

an alternate version of John Barry's main title from "The Knaxk" A cover version by Ferrante & Teicher?

I've had this Sepia CD for a while but only just got around to playing it today, and I've spotted a few oddities that I suspect are carried over from the original LPs: Firstly, Smile is not from the soundtrack; it's Don Costa's version. Plus - The Vikings, The Big Country, The Horse Soldiers and The Wonderful Country are not from the OSTs either, so am I right in assuming they're the Mitchell Powell/Hollywood Studio Orchestra versions? Bumped, just in case anyone out there can help with my query...

I'd always assumed that the credits on this CD release were correct* but had a problem in tracking down a 1950's recording of Smile performed by Alfred Newman ... and then your posting gave me the answer. Well, looking into your query as to the true performers on some of the other tracks, I've found this Amazon listing which appears to confirm your suggestion that those 4 tracks are indeed performed by Mitchell Powell conducting the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra - see: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003RCYDME/ref=dm_ws_sp_ps_dp The Big Country looks as if the timing is off but the track on this compilation album does fade and could easily have been edited short on the Amazon listed album. * except, of course: tr.25 which is Duke Ellington, not Louis Armstrong, from the soundtrack to Paris Blues (1961) Mitch

I've not come across RKO Orchestral before. Most of their catalogue seems to be old 101 Strings albums so not sure where the RKO bit comes in!
