Finally, after all these years, on May 20th, Paramount will be releasing a Region 1 DVD of the 1972 William Holden-Ernest Borgnine western THE REVENGERS. For more information on this film, see the post of June 1, 2012 in this thread. I haven't seen this film since the day I watched it in the theater 42 years ago.

Fantastic news regarding Arthur Marks' long lost 1973 drive-in classic, THE ROOMMATES (see entry on page 33 of this thread):

No release date set yet, but the sample clip looks fantastic. I saw this at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin several years ago (print in very rough shape, lots of scratches, misaligned frames, several jumps, etc.) so it will be great to see this gem fully restored. It's been a long time coming folks and our patience is finally being rewarded!

Some bad news regarding the CBS/Paramount release of the 1972 western THE REVENGERS: The film has been released in a compromised aspect ratio of 1.78:1 rather than its full 2.35:1 theatrical Panavision aspect ratio. Oh well. I guess three-quarters of the picture is better than none at all.

EDIT: Happily, the above post is in error. I've corrected it, five posts below.

It's 2.35:1 on DVD here in Australia Bob. If interested please drop me a line: arthur@thecinemacafe.com

Just wqatched LAST HARD MEN on Encore in 1:78 and truthfully, I didn't even notice it was actually 2;25 until the titles came on.

Westerns seem to do ok in 1:78 cuz' of all those outdoor vistas

What ever happened to this obscure thread starter???!!

I've been wondering that myself. DAN THE MAN once announced that he was signing off this board for good, then returned a few months later. Perhaps he has now permanently ended the relationship.

I'd like to correct what I said above about the aspect ratio of the U.S. DVD for THE REVENGERS. Originally, I played the first few minutes of the film on my old 4:3 television, which is not a good way to visually judge aspect ratios. That, and the fact that the only information on the disc packaging itself reads "Aspect Ratio: 16x9" led me to conclude that the picture was indeed in the 1.78:1 (16:9) ratio.

But after I put the film up on my computer monitor, a true 16x9 screen, it's clear that the film is letterboxed within that 16x9 frame, and measures out to a true 2.35:1 image. In comparing that image to what appears on my old 4:3 TV, it's also apparent that the overscan on my television cuts off enough image to reduce the width of a 2.35:1 image to 2.17:1.

In any case, you can buy the DVD with confidence that the image is correct.

Pino Calvi's score for THE REVENGERS came in for some criticism when the film was released in 1972, as being too busy and noisy, but today it sounds like gold to my melody-starved ears. The recording of the Main Title in this YouTube clip is a bit dodgy--it sounds somewhat better smoothed out on the film's mono optical track:

Its a great score bob, had it a few years now, great main theme.
And any film with a rare Bunch pairing of Holden and Borgnine cant be bad.

I've heard from a reliable source that he is busy writing, directing, editing and producing his latest film, and then he has to compose the music as well as write the lyrics to the theme tune and also having to promote the film to all those people he knows in the industry.

Well when you are an auteur like Dan - its tough fitting all those jobs in with being logged on permanently and starting a new thread a minute on fsm.
So much fantasy to invent, so little time.
