Enough with the expansion talk already! I want to focus on the completely unreleased music by some of my favourite composers (at most a theme or brief suite on some compilation). Bootlegs don't count.

I've provided a list below (please let me know if I've left out something), and thought it would be interesting to do a "Top 3" most desired of these titles. Next out is John Williams:

FILMS:

YOU ARE WELCOME
SILENT FILM - PIANO DUET
A TIMELESS CALL
THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS
THE SCREAMING WOMAN
STORIA DI UNA DONNA
DADDY'S GONE A-HUNTING
SERGEANT RYKER
THE PLAINSMAN
THE RARE BREED
THE KATHERINE REED STORY
THE KILLERS
NIGHTMARE IN CHICAGO
GIDGET GOES TO ROME
THE SECRET WAYS
BECAUSE THEY'RE YOUNG
I PASSED FOR WHITE
DADDY-O
INSIDE THE MOVIE KINGDOM

TV SHOWS:

List found here:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=86871&forumID=1&archive=0

(towards the end of the thread, a few of them HAVE actually had soundtrack releases, but most of them don't)

CONCERT WORKS:

PIANO SONATA
WIND QUINTET
SYMPHONY NO. 1
ESPLANADE OVERTURE (even though it's basically "Meeting in Sicily")
CELEBRATION FANFARE
WE'RE LOOKING GOOD
FANFARE FOR MICHAEL DUKAKIS
FANFARE FOR TEN-YEAR-OLDS
CONCERT FOR CLARINET AND ORCHESTRA (I won't count the horrible-sounding mp3 release)
SEVEN FOR LUCK
FOR SEJII!
CONCERTO FOR VIOLA AND ORCHESTRA
YOUNG PERSON'S GUIDE TO THE CELLO
QUARTET LA JOLLA
SCHERZO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA
A TOAST!
JUST DOWN WEST STREET...ON THE LEFT
HIGHWOOD'S GHOST: AN ENCOUNTER FOR CELLO, HARP AND ORCHESTRA

Personally, my list would look like this at the present time:

1. STORIA DI UNA DONNA
2. SYMPHONY NO. 1
3. ALCOA PREMIERE THEATRE

SUGARLAND EXPRESS is an important score to get out (for the Spielberg connection), but not that interesting beyond the theme.

great, don't know if there is anything missing here -

from the concert some (the newer ones) have been performed in the last years and also been recorded (not for release - though you never know, the Sony 80ties Birthday Tribute presented an older recording of JW's happy-birthday-variations which was in the can)

- but the early ones;
do you know or does anybody know of performances (beyond the premier) or recordings?

I'm not sure what you're referring to. None of the concert works listed have been recorded for commercial release. A few have been recorded as part of, say, a radio program (like SOUNDINGS) or video recordings.

slight detail... I believe THE KILLERS is available as an isolated score track on the Criterion DVD, so it's not entirely accurate that it has never had a legit release.

To Thor- great thread, be good if we can do this with many film composers, let's see what we are missing.

My top pick would be The Rare Breed. I really enjoy the suite performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic and would be very interested to hear the original tracks.

As for his concert music, I'm pretty sure Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony are in the midst of performing and recording his complete concerto cycle, and releasing them via iTunes. So far they've released his horn and violin concerti. Let's hope they get to his as-yet-unreleased ones, like the clarinet, viola, and oboe concerti sooner rather than later.

And that symphony of his is something I would love to hear. I doubt it will happen; I don't think he is happy with it.

Has FOR SEIJI! ever been released commercially? It was written (in 1998?) to commemorate Seiji Ozawa's 25th anniversary with the Boston Symphony. I think it may have been retitled TRIBUTES! at some point along the way.

I was at the BSO concert in '98 when it premiered, and from what I recall it was a powerful piece; modern-sounding like his concerti, but with highlights for each section of the ensemble, much like a miniature concerto-for-orchestra. As it happens, the main piece on the program that night was Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, so it made for a good pairing!

THE PLAINSMAN
THE RARE BREED
THE SECRET WAYS

Not familiar with Secret Ways so I'd say the first two plus Sgt. Ryker. Really cool that there are so few remaining (though I am one of the folks that wouldn't mind expansions of some of the ones that are already out there, but will respect Thor's request by not listing them here.

I was just about to mention that he also wrote a piano duet about ten years ago for an old silent film. I just googled for more and was very pleasantly surprised to see it on YouTube:

Let's add Johnny's full body of work for NBC news and NBC sports and his Great Performances theme.

I know, and I have that myself, but I don't really count isolated score tracks as a fullblown soundtrack release.

Now that you mention it, I'm a bit unsure. I have an unofficial recording and I always keep confusing it with the variations for Lenny Bernstein, but I'll have to check my back catalogue. Something tells me this was released recently.

Let's add Johnny's full body of work for NBC news and NBC sports and his Masterpiece Theatre theme.

Some of it has been released (there was even a 2CD promo with most of the NBC themes and bumpers), but there is a little bit left, like the "NBC Rodeo" theme which I was recently alerted to. The MASTERPIECE THEATER theme was released as a download-only track.

That silent film thing had totally slipped my mind. I'll add it.

Yeah, the recent Sony compilation included the FOR SEJII piece, renamed HAPPY BIRTHDAY VARIATIONS:

This is a pretty comprehensive list. Not sure if this is relevant, but I've always wondered why John Williams would sound like preforming Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D Minor Op. 125, Ode to Joy.

I would add his work on the Sherman Bros TOM SAWYER musical.
Like GOODBYE MR CHIPS, there's some fantastic Williams material that just oozes that 70's Americana-style class. Yes, an LP was released with the songs and featuring Williams' arrangements, but NONE OF HIS SCORE has ever been released, and mighty fine stuff it is.
Together with STORY OF A WOMAN, they are my two most desired John Williams releases now.

"Yeah, the recent Sony compilation included the FOR SEJII piece, renamed HAPPY BIRTHDAY VARIATIONS:"
--------------------------------
???
They are two completely different pieces.
I've heard the HAPPY BIRTHDAY VARIATIONS track, courtesy of Mark Langdon (and I will probably pick this CD up in the future, when Amazon offer it quite cheaply) and it's NOTHING to do with For Sejii.
It is, however, like his Star Spangled Banner arrangement, another fantastic showcase of how Mr Williams can take a piece of music you've heard your whole life and make it sound like something he wrote himself, via his orchestration abilities. I remember it started out like a variation of his Hogwarts Hymn and then segues into other familiar JW styles.

Really? I don't have the Sony release, but just presumed it was a reworking of the birthday piece he wrote for Sejii (and others) i 1995. But you're right now that I got my brain back in order...."For Sejii" is a separate piece (which I actually have in an unofficial format) and has not yet been released, to my recollection.

As for TOM SAWYER, you're right. It has some pretty nice score as well. I'm not sure one should have a separate release for that; it should ideally have been released when they did the CD a couple of years ago. But part of some future compilation or something would be nice.

"Let's add ..... his Masterpiece Theatre theme."
------------------------------------------

Is this piece the same as American Collection Theme, as featured on the Classic Yo-Yo (Ma) CD?

I'd say Storia Di Una Donna is my most sought after film score of his. I find myself wanting more of the non-film work than I do the film scores though. I have a not very good Boston Pops TV recording of We're Feeling Good for orchestra but I'd be very curious to hear it with chorus and lryics. We need another American Journey-type of release where he can put on one CD a lot of sought-after gems.
