Trumpet players, according to what I found online:

George Dillon (Trumpet)
Calvin Price (Trumpet)
Warren Luening (Trumpet)
Boyde Hood (Trumpet)
David Washburn (Trumpet)

And IMDb lists Chris Tedesco also.

Appreciate it, but I'm still hoping somebody might have firsthand knowledge of who was playing lead.

After repeated listening one can hear that Joel never uses Jerry's five note Borg motif in his compositions.
B

That's not true.

It does gets a vague orchestral statement at the start and finale of PHOENIX. ..so technically you are correct.

Joel used Jerry's 5-note Borg theme; in addition to is appearance at the beginning of “The Flight of the Phoenix,” it is the counterpoint in “Battle Watch,” there is a hesitant version in “They're Here,” and it is used extensively throughout “Retreat,” and also at the beginning of “Smorgasborg.”

Guess we have a different interpretation of the
term "use".
Whatever.

"Flight of the Phoenix" is one of my favorite cues from this soundtrack. smile

Yes mine too and Joel scored that cue! Even the producers were pleasantly surprised.

Strange that was left off. They did include some of Joel's music on the ost. Right?

You're Goldsmith collection isn't complete until you've sampled every score available for purchase and decided whether you need to own it.

I leave that to my manservant Riotengine .

Oh, have I been promoted now? big grin

I'm not sure how that's open to interpretation… the motif is either there (which it is, as I pointed out) or it isn't.

This is still one of the loveliest themes he’s ever done. I still listen to this constantly.
