"From the Makers of 'The Last Exorcism'" comes The Frankenstein Theory...college kid thrown out for his wild theories hires camera crew to travel north to document his attempt to confirm that Mary Shelley's novel "Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus" was not exactly a work of fiction, after holding Captain Walton's actual letters in his family all these years...

...but it's such a boring journey (50 minutes before anything of any substance happens, in a sub-90 minute film)...as for the "creature" - um - did any of the writers actually read "Frankenstein" before they wrote this? Thought not...yet again the articulate majestic creature is reduced to a roaring, growling neanderthal...which is hardly seen anyway...and - for one last blooming blinking f***ing time - the creature is not named "Frankenstein"!!! OK? GOT IT??? If you're going to call him anything, it's frickin' "Adam"!!!

...and who found the footage? Who found the blinkin' footage?? Wouldn't the Neanderthal (I refuse now to associate him with Shelley's 'Adam') kill them too?? Oh please...

Oh - and what was the deal with the guy who they nearly ran over near the begninning? That was the most tense scene in the whole movie...but absolutely, completely, 100% redundant.

Such a shame - I thought this was a great concept, I really did, but boy oh boy oh BOY...

....but I wouldn't bother....

So it's exactly like The Last Exorcism (one of the most boring horror films in recent years)?

Tastes will always differ, but read previous posts for opinions on The Last Exorcism...which I thoroughly enjoyed...

And here we go again.

A couple of sequels to chew on...

The Last Exorcism Pt II...Yes, I know it's not "Found Footage" but it is the sequel to one so thought it worth mentioning. I had hopes for this after the decent first installment...what a shame. I would probably avoid this one, unless you want to see another good performance by Ashley Bell (she just keeps getting better...think she has a great career ahead of her) or unless you need to fill in the gap before seeing Pt III (which I doubt will happen now). Last 5 minutes are fine, but the rest is an interminable bore.

VHS 2 Slimming the number of segments down seems to raise the level...if you hated the first one then leave well alone, but if you enjoyed the first one you are going to have a blast with this. Four segments, with a wraparound tale. 3 good segments, and OK wraparound...and plonked in the middle is the story "Safe Haven"...just absolutely, completely, and deliciously bonkers...trust Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid) to be involved with this...strap in, and try and keep up! Kudos to the team behind "A Ride In The Park" too...I wasn't keen on the woolly conclusion, but the film is very aptly described as a "New Slant on an Old Classic".

Found The Bigfoot Tapes aka Bigfoot County (according to IMDb) in a bargain bin today....gave it a spin...a movie of three acts - Act I: Get to know the characters (although this could have done with tightening, it serves it's purpose well and the characters are relatively realistic and likeable)....Act II: Trot out the Found Footage cliches (and they are all present and correct here...every single one) as a documentary crew look for evidence of the existence of Bigfoot, with a local who may or may not have a screw loose. So far, so ok Now- Act III: There was a moment around the hour-mark when I thought to myself "Isn't this movie...like...certificated 18? I wonder why..."...and not long after, you find out why. Things take...a bit of a turn, and quite a surprising and shocking one if I'm honest...showing the importance of the character setting (if Act I had been screwed up, this ending would not have worked at all)...and the film comes to an end rather than a conclusion...no more clues - catch this one if you can...

The Slaughter Tapes - Police interview footage wraps around a found-footage documentary tape that covers an amateur film crew's attempts to understand the porn industry, concentrating on one particular actress. Nice idea, OK for what it is, manages to build some tension, but seems to squander it with a very unsatisfying conclusion.

Alien Abduction: Incident In Lake County....it's around, if you're lucky enough to stumble upon it..."Pre-Blair Witch" TV Found Footage corker...Family celebrating thanksgiving are terrorised by..well...aliens. Footage is interdispersed with interviews of experts. Claustrophobic, genuine performaces (for the most part), great use of torchlight, atmosphere in spades...and some genuinely freakin' scary moments...if only they had had a slightly larger budget to help take care of just a couple of things....but very, very good and highly recommended.

It's a long wait for things to get going in Unaware...couple go on weekend retreat to grandfather's house, where something has been stored in the shed and has been there since 1947...along with a letter from someone rather important detailing something called the "Majestic 12"...just don't think about it too much!! (Why would something so important be stored in a shed?? And why does the Found Footage appear??). It's worth the wait though - a lot of talk gives way to some great camera moments, some very tense scenes and a good scare or three. Good fun (eventually) - just disengage the brain for this one.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident aka Devil's Pass...if you don't know what the real-life story is behind the Dyatlov Pass, don't worry - a potted history (somewhat inaccurate, but enough to understand the movie) is given early on in this flick. Also early on, the flick seems to have a split-personality...not sure whether to be Found Footage or straight-ahead documentary...choosing after about 10 minutes to go with the former. A group of filmmakers head to the Dyatlov Pass to try and understand once and for all what happened to that team in the 1950's...but something may be travelling alongside them...and why do the footprints lead nowhere?

I suspected I knew where this was going...I couldn't have been more wrong...(HINT - a cameo by Michael Pare and Bobby Di Cicco doesn't happen...but would have been fun wink ) the last 30 minutes exceed even the Evidence level of bonkers...some startling effects, shots lingering JUST long enough, a careful calculation as to how much is too much...and characters that - although corny at times - do seem to have an existence...not cardboard cutouts...we actually care...a little..particularly at the closing moments. And it is the closing moments I have most trouble with...if anything there is too much packed in there...one line in particular had vast implications, but was just blurbed out...too much...I wanted another 10 minutes on this movie just to let some of it - and the implications of what was being suggested - breathe a little (unusual for me....FF Movies longer than 90 minutes tend to outstay their welcome for me...I wanted more here)...

Nice to see Renny Harlin back behind the camera...he's done a good'un...not a huge fan of his (aside from a movie or two), but he knows how to push a movie forward and keep the audience entertained...and this movie is an ample demonstration of this talent. This one's also getting a limited run in cinemas in the UK...go catch it if you can...if not, this one's for a quiet, dark evening with no distractions and a good sound system.

I have a lot of time for Andrew Traucki...his first feature ended up being one of the best horror films of recent times (2007's Black Water, which I highly recommend) and followed it up with the excellent, albeit not remotely as tense, The Reef...the man knows how to switch on tension and rack it up, and also cares about his characters and how we feel about them..so I was looking forward to his latest movie - The Jungle. Group of Aussie animal lovers + Cameraman & guide hit the Bush to try and locate a rare breed of big cat...only to find something else may have got there before them. But it's...just...well...meh...right from the crappy title, to the repetitious scenes, to the (often) cliched camera stuff...I was hoping for something more....and though the tension DOES rack up (a lot - there are some great moments herein...but that's part of the problem...they are just moments) towards the end, it becomes too little too late (especially since we never get to properly see what the crew are up against...judging by what we DO see, this might be a good thing). I look forward to another Traucki movie, because this is just not up to his standard...he is better than this.

EDITED TO ADD...I wonder if I'm being fair to this film...Traucki IS better than this...I wonder if there was some shenanigans going on with editing, studio pressure to keep time short etc etc...it just doesn't sit right.

Frankenstein's Army...bonkers mish-mash of horror/sci fi in which Russian soldiers discover that our friendly Baron may have had family...one of whom may be working for the Nazi's around the end of WW2 and experimenting on making cyborg-style creatures...a visual feast to be sure, moves along at a cracking pace, and a game cast...but surprisingly ineffectual...I was left thinking "Yes...and...so what?", whereas the ramifications of Frankenstein's work could have been huge...is was just all...kinda...something of nothing. I want more, dammit!! (sequel?).

Apartment 143 - OK bit of fluff about Paranormal Investigation team moving into a family's apartment after being told that the deceased Mother of the family may be trying to get in touch. Some shocks, some scares, but many of the scares - particularly in the first hour - are given so much build-up or warning that it is often anti-climactic...5 minutes chopped out of this movie's already slim 77-minute running time would actually do it a lot of favours, I think. The more ridiculous elements of the script (and there are quite a few) don't help. Did no-one think about the back-story to the "haunting" before they wrote this? Nevertheless, it's an OK ride, and the fun final 15 minutes make up for a lot (though the final scene is....clunky....). Note - Brian Yuzna gets a "Thanks" in the credits.

A few more to add to the list:

If you liked Lake Mungo, check out The Midnight Swim.

Borderlands (US title: Final Prayer) is good.

The Tunnel, Carlo Ledesma's Aussie found footage flick, was very creepy.

If you're into a very minimalist, very slow-burn flick with some very dark (almost invisible) humor, Bobcat Goldthwait's Willow Creek may interest you, though it's very polarizing and many just find it a boring nothing of a movie.

Greatest found footage "in" a horror movie -- when the Monster throws the little girl in the lake in FRANKENSTEIN (1931). Thank the movie gods that was found.
