The now legendary pairing of director Tim Burton and Danny Elfman again yields an immensely creative and complex film score that melds orchestra, percussion and electronics to enrich the film’s subtext and characters, all the while propelling its large-scale action. La-La Land Records and 20th Century Fox presents the remastered and expanded release of renowned composer Maurice Jarre’s (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, THE PROFESSIONALS, WITNESS, ENEMY MINE) sumptuously romantic score to 20th Century Fox’s 1995 post WWII-era drama A WALK IN THE CLOUDS, starring Keanu Reeves and Anthony Quinn and directed by Alfonso Arau. Composer Jarre’s lush and heartwarming orchestral score, full of sweeping and colorful themes, perfectly compliments cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki’s breathtaking imagery, while also harnessing the film’s deeply felt emotions and romantic plot, set against a post WWII Napa Valley vineyard. At 72 minutes, this expanded release nearly doubles the length of this score’s previous soundtrack releases. I'm content with my original release of POTA, but I wonder if there are any differences between this set and the one in the Elfman/Burton box. Wasn't that an expanded thingie too?
There wasn't much extra material for POTA or Sleepy Hollow on the set.
In fact, and I HATE to say this since I have the Elfman/Burton box, my name is in the book, and it was clearly a labor of love for all involved...
...but these releases are making that set more and more irrelevant. I'm eternally grateful for everything LLL is doing and I've purchased every expanded Elfman title and will continue to do so... but these go light years beyond what's in the E/B set.
Yeah, the set includes some cool demo material and other oddities that Elfman dug up from his closet (stuff that LLL wouldn't have had access to) but one could get by without it.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, and Big Fish get revisited one day.
The big prizes in the set continue to be the expanded Disney titles (Nightmare and Alice) and, even though it's not complete, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, which I doubt Varese will be revisiting anytime soon.
Having said all that, I'm still glad I bought the set and I'm glad LLL is releasing these titles for folks that don't have it (and nuts like me who want everything).
