SILVA SCREEN RECORDS MARKS COMPOSER JOHN WILLIAMS’S 80th BIRTHDAY (8th February 2012) BY RELEASING A COMPREHENSIVE 6 CD SET FEATURING 87 TRACKS AND OVER 7 HOURS OF MUSIC

Silva Screen Records Proudly Presents
The Music Of John Williams - The Definitive Collection

Since 1972, when he won his first Oscar, John Williams has received 47 Oscar nominations including 5 wins, 2 Emmys, 3 Golden Globes, 7 Baftas and more then twenty Gold and Platinum Records. Today, he is one of the most respected and acclaimed composers in Hollywood.

Perhaps the film composer of the biggest number of instantly recognisable themes and motifs, John Williams's immense musical output has now secured him a “cultural icon” status.

2012 also marks 40 years since John Williams and Steven Spielberg first met and started a hugely successful collaboration lasting to this day. Spielberg's composer of choice, Williams penned the unforgettable music for Jaws, Schindler's List, the four Indiana Jones films, E.T., Saving Private Ryan, as well as now classic themes for the Star Wars series, Superman and the first three Harry Potter films.

The immense quantity and quality of John Williams's film scores has propelled his work into the top All-Time Worldwide Box Office films list - he scored 16 of them, more than any other composer. In 2005, the American Film Institute unveiled its list of the Top 25 Film Scores of all time and John Williams features at #1 (Star Wars), # 6 (Jaws) and # 14 (E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial).

“John certainly has the most considerable impact because his music immediately bypasses the brain and goes straight to your heart. That's the way he's always been... an amazing talent."
- Steven Spielberg

The collection is performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

10 . Variations On A Theme by John Williams - The Long Goodbye 11:50
11 . Nice To Be Around - Cinderella Liberty 04:00

I haven't heard those recordings before. Interesting!

Is there a harmonica on Nice To Be Around?
I love that piece, but I'm not all that into harmonicas and I've always hoped for an orchestral arrangement sans harmonica.

This is aimed at an audience who doesn't have the original albums and wants a good sampling of Williams' music. So instead of buying a few dozen CDs, you get the collection.

I'm not so sure about that. A 6-CD set, unless it's priced at a bargain level, is quite a lot to expect a casual fan to pick up. In my opinion, this is the kind of collection that would really only appeal to a Williams completist. Then again, a Williams completist had probably already bought each previous Silva compilation...

It all depends on the price.

Where did you see that? I just checked and see it listed for $54.12 (US). $40 is a great price for the collection, I wouldn't hesitate at that cost.

You know what? You're right. When I added it to my wish list, it was only $40. Should have locked in a preorder. Ack!

Well, I am in France and it is cheaper to order it here:

22£.88 is a nice good price for a 6 cds box.

Yeah, that is coming out for his 85th birthday. I want to see what comes out for his 100th birthday. Can you imagine the size of that Varese box?

Silva has it listed at £25.00, which is approximately $40 before shipping - their international shipping is fairly cheap and quite fast.

I just received this from Amazon.

There is a slipcase box which contains six discs in slim cases - I don't know how to describe these jewel cases other than to say if you ever bought a CD Single back in the day...it's exactly like that. There is not much in the way of liner notes, just the track listing and obligatory copyright and performance credits, there a free PDF liner note download @

http://www.definitivejohnwilliams.com/

Pros:
-All the main stuff is here
-Indiana Jones Disc has removed the Cole Porter tracks!
-It's not a digipack!

Cons
-Nothing from Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull - this was the perfect time to record the various concert suites...oh well.
-The upcoming "Complete Harry Potter Collection" CD includes a track from Chamber of Secrets that wasn't included here. How was this overlooked? Do they really just want to me to the Harry Potter CD too?
-The way these jewel cases work, the artwork side of the disc faces out so you have to touch the bottom of the disc to get it out and put it back in. It seems so much easier to get fingerprints and such on the data side of he disc.

The online liner notes is one of the better ones I have seen from Silva - there are several quotes about John Williams as well as birthday wishes to him from various Hollywood composers. it appears that it was an article Michael Beek did for MftM that was never published

Highly recommend that everyone checks out these free notes, regardless of if you buy the physical product or not.

As far as track selection goes, I would have preferred the full Cowboys Overture over the shorter suite and could have done without The Long Goodbye track. I am not sure why for the Olympic Fanfare they opted to use the London Music Works instead of the full CoPPO. This version certainly sounds OK.
