The Man.

(And anything with Al Schmitt's name on it is a mark of quality.)

I never cared for Sinatra's "public persona;" he seemed a bit too smug and a bit too arrogant.
But--
He was probably the finest vocalist of the 20th Century because he was a damn fine actor.
Listen to "It was a very good year," then watch THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM or SOME CAME RUNNING.

I liked "Marriage On The Rocks" too.

One Sinatra recording that isn't on any C.D. compilation is "Anytime I'll Be There" (composed by Paul Anka) which was one of his few singles in '75, along "I Believe I'm Gonna Love You". Bob Gaudio (yes the same Bob Gaudio of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons") arranged and conducted on the first single.

Thank goodness it can be found in the Reprise Studio Recordings box.
(In fact, it shares the same disc space as "I Love My Wife"--and people tear a strip off of "Mama Will Bark"? big grin)

Hmm.
Handy-dandy Discogs says that CBS Japan put it out in 1989.
That's a hefty price tag, though!

I was a but surprised to learn that "Come Back to Sorrento" is somewhat of a standard. In the documentary LET'S GET LOST, Chet Baker mentions that Stan Kenton bandmember Vido Musso established a career as a bandleader after his playing on Kenton's version proved to be a hit.

Personally, I can't stand it. big grin (although the rhythm section is good)

From the London Observer, Benny Green wrote when Sinatra announced his early 1970's retirement:

"What few people, apart from musicians, have ever seemed to grasp is that he is not simply the best popular singer of his generation, a latter-day Jolson or Crosby, but the culminating point in an evolutionary process which has refined the art of interpreting words set to music.

Nor is there even the remotest possibility that he will have a successor. Sinatra was the result of a fusing of a set of historical circumstances which can never be repeated."

Quoted in The Great American Popular Singers by Henry Pleasants (Simon and Schuster, 1974)

I've always liked Point of No Return. It definitely feels like "the end of something" and the (lush) re-recording of previous Sinatra favorites only makes the album all the more reflective. It's quite different in tone than the first several Reprise albums to come, where Frank had a renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

I have never been able to get into the stuff pre-dating Capitol, try though I may.

That's because you "haven't lived and loved like Frank".
Brm

P.s. first person to get the reference gets a cookiewink

I was eloquently expressing the hell out of myself when I wrote that post, let me tell you.

You sons of Barrabus sure are lucky to have me here. I'm a regular Second Coming of Richard Negative Doble Ve.

Don't worry, I'll be sure to remind you all again later.

During the recording of "Point of No Return," arranger Axel Stordahl was dying of cancer. Supposedly, he was coughing up blood between tunes. Sinatra would simply say, "next" and move along to the next tune. It was the final Capitol contractual obligation record.

The hairs on my neck stood up when you wrote that Jim.
And the cat went white and hid in the cupboard under the stairs. He wont come out for days now. wink

In fairness Oct looking back over this thread i think the forum may owe you a debt of gratitude for whatever percentage of push you contributed.
I dont know about Marshall Man of the Year - or if such an esteemed award still runs - but you are certainly a strong forerunner for the Carson Man of the Year. Even if its for lifetime services, im prepared to backdate to 2015!! big grin
