For those on this forum who do not like most of the new artwork done for these vinyl reissues, the new ASSAULT artwork hews closely to the theatrical key art, in terms of colors, font, and copy, while retaining some originality.

For those in the U.S. in the market for the Death Waltz CD, go with their official U.S. distributor, Light in the Attic Records: http://lightintheattic.net/releases/988-assault-on-precinct-13

Gave it a listen. Sound quality is very good. I highly recommend it. Nice album notes by John Carpenter. The number of score tracks is 16, identical to the Buysoundtrax CD. Overall, the BSX CD runs longer than the Death Waltz CD. I'll have to get the BSX CD at some point for the Dark Star tracks.

Greg Espinoza

I'm confused why everyone here seems to want the BSX one so badly, in some cases more than the original. Aren't all the BSX tracks re-performed by Alan Howarth?

I have a rare B**tleg CD of this score, it contains a vocal track called "You Can't Fight It" by a singer named Jimmy Chambers.

I was t even aware of the re-recording.
Perfectly happy with the original dirty synth.

The re-recording features both ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and DARK STAR. Alan Howarth has nailed the Carpenter synth sound (which, of course, is no surprise as they collaborated many times together on their scores), and the sound quality is way above the original tracks. ASSAULT is not complex music, but more a hyper-minimalist synth-pulse with an attitude, among my favorite Carpenter scores.

Me, too. Also amazed that Alan Howarth and John Carpenter have had no discernible relationship for decades and yet Howarth seems to spend an inordinate amount of time co-opting, almost exclusively, Carpenter-related projects in the form of re-recordings and "re-masters." Odd.

That said, if there's a market for it and some people seem to enjoy it, great. I'm just not one of them. An original recording with sub-standard sound quality, for example, will always trump for me a re-recording with awesome sound.

Hm - yes, the re-recording isn't bad at all. But while i really love Howarth's "The Thing" recreations (where he REALLY nailed the sounds), i think "Assault" differs quite a bit. Some sounds are close (the rhythms are imo the sampled and looped originals with added panorama), but others differ quite a bit. Especially the phrasing of a few melodies ("Julie") is off / different than the originals.

But given that the original Assault tracks are great sounding and widely available, it's cool that Alan took some liberties.

Now "Dark Star" is a different story - if only we could get the original tracks (that have gone AWOL in the 70's as i think i read somewhere)... I have quite a soft spot for this little gem :-)

Best,
Burnie

thats intetesting.
i have a crappy audiotape i made in the cinema on release in the uk. weirdly this same "You cant fight it, you cant beat the system" track was used as the end title music .
some few years later- early 80s - when i got the very first video release of Precinct 13 in the uk - this track was missing over the closing credits and had been replaced with a repeat of the instrumental main theme.

there was allegedly a Pye 45rpm single of this Jimmy chambers song and b side precinct 13 theme released and then oop/deleted from the catalogue the next day.
ive never seen a copy of this ghost 45 or heard of anyone owning it. but it is supposed to exist.

be nice if theres anyone else out there with any further info on this.

i was aware of a later 12 inch with assault theme and a german synth band with a track called the end.

as far as i know, this is totally different to the brief pye 7inch single.

my info dates back to late 70s so things were a bit sketchy then. some of you will remember all record shops had a huge thick catalogue of available records, like a bible. the info came from that.

Bill,
It says on the CD case....."In 1978 John Carpenter teamed up with the singer Kenny Lynch to release a single"You Can't Fight It" this was quickly withdrawn and never re-released. It is argued that some British prints of the film were originally released with this song on the end credits, and why the single was withdrawn remains a mystery."

I always kind of thought there was a falling out with Carpenter & Howarth, but the very good interview AH gave on the recent blu ray reissue of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK seems to tell otherwise. No bad blood that I an discern. That's a great 10min. interview, some fun trivia there, Alan seems like a nice guy. And explains that annoying big yellow sticker on the old ESCAPE lp.

I like the Death Waltz ASSAULT CD too, if only for the weirdest packaging ever (the disc is literally housed in a pop-up book).

well found. ooh er. kenny lynch? Well, thats ironic. Due to having a mutual friend, At one time i had a number for him. i will look into it, see if the number is still current. And will see what info i can obtain to solve the mystery. thanks.

i do like the bit about "it was argued some british prints were released.." - they can argue all they want, we know its true, i got it on tape. complete with people coughing and the seats banging as all ten people left the theatre!!

Just got this in the mail today. Great release. As early and rough as it is compared to Carpenter's later stuff, I find it very listenable.

Giving the new(ish) Death Waltz CD a right proper listen. To my ears it sounds slightly fuller than the Record Makers release. I don't get the impression there were any separate tracks from which to master so maybe a bit of equalization or volume push is all that could be done? Anyone else know the history behind the elements available for this score and how it was realized for this release?

And anyone find out any further details about the song? Was it indeed ever on any prints of the film?

This is actually one of my favourite Carpenter scores. Pure genius for what he had at the time - the same kind of ballsy fortitude in composition that the film has. Spare, mean, lean, razor-sharp. Repetitive and yet that's partly what works so well. It nicely mirrors the repetitive nature of the violence and this uncompromising "assault" on the occupants of the precinct (which we all know is actually Precinct 9, Division 13 smile).

Carpenter has also never written a more tender piece to my recollection than "Julie."

Afaik the song "You can't fight it" was used as the opening music in the Italian release
of the movie back in 1978.

Apparently it was officially released in remastered form on 10” vinyl back in 2014 by a label called
Fly By Night Music. You can listen to it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frKJee1zwS0

EDIT: I do know that Carpenter's original AOP13 score was recorded on 8-track tape but I strongly doubt the original master exist. It'd be interesting to know what audio sources were used for the CD releases by Record makers and death waltz. They both sound pretty good to my ears, clear and punchy.

Alan Howarth's re-recording sounds decent but I still prefer the original by far. IMO these old synth-scores just doesn't sound right on modern software synths. The original was recorded on a big Moog modular synth and nothing else sounds like it.
