BTW: originally the script of 55 DAYS included a lot of scenes, most of them involving Ava Gardner, which were either never filmed, or simply cut. According to Heston's account, Ms. Gardner was drinking heavily, and often unable to show up for filming. Consequently, a major subplot, including an affair her character had with the Leo Genn character, was mostly left to a few mentions in other people's lines. Likewise the later death of the Robert Helpmann character, Prince Tuan, trampled to death by a crowd of fleeing refugees, was only seen in the comic book version.

Apparently, the making of the film was very challenging, though I found the end result most entertaining. Now it seems like a relic of a bygone age of Caucasian, Western European supremacy, the sort of legacy of what was, even then, the fading British Empire. Which was actually already almost gone when this film came out.
