Watched The Rum Diary today, which was the first time since I saw the film in November 2011. Much of what Young provides is a pastiche of late fifties-early/mid sixties jazz and lounge music. We get cues that sound like Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Lee Morgan/Freddie Hubbard, Bill Perkins during his "Bossa Nova" period, and even something that's Manciniesque. There are also some bluesy numbers as well as a few score tracks with a much edgier feel to them, heard as the film tilts towards a more serious tone. If one hasn't heard the music from which Young "channels", then it might be even more enjoyable, but for those of us familiar with those other artists, perhaps less so. I enjoy the film more than most anyone else, though.
