Original Motion Picture Score

REAL STEEL

Music Composed by
Danny Elfman
(Alice In Wonderland, The Wolfman, Milk)

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, REAL STEEL stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Real Steel is directed by Shawn Levy (Night At The Museum franchise and Date Night).

In a score that mixes guitar with symphony orchestra and choir, composer Danny Elfman returns to cinemas with this Fall action blockbuster.

DreamWorks Pictures opens REAL STEEL nationwide on October 7.

Awesome, I was thinking that no one was going to put this one out. Of course, I have no intention of actually seeing the flick, but I'll happily throw down some cash for the CD.

Awesome news. That 'one track on the songtrack' thing pissed me right off.

What is this, 1997?

Ummm nothing about this movie...judging from the trailers...looks gritty or white knuckle at all. This looks less interesting than that dolphin-with-a-mechanical-tail movie coming out.

Elfman's score...hopefully will be more in line with his more modern action scores ( The Kingdom, Proof Of Life) and less his comic-book/fantasy efforts. Very eager to hear this one

There's a free ticket to the movie on Blu-Ray copies of The Prestige at Best Buy, so I'll probably end up seeing it anyways. Elfman and Freckles from Lost are reason enough to give it a shot. wink

V'rese claims the score "mixes guitar with symphony orchestra and choir." I have to say I'm excited, especially as this is just the first of many high-profile Elfman scores comign in the next year and a half to two years (Oz: The Great and Powerfu, Frankenweenie, Dark Shadows, Men in Black III, The Hunger Games, et al.).

Yes, I was hoping for this one. I also see Varese took my advice (I'm joking really) and just decided to put it out after the movie instead of announcing and delaying it. :-) Again...thats a joke. I love Varese.

Well, if they've patched things up, why not? Although it would certainly be interesting to see what Christopher Young would do (why does Raimi only ever seem to use Young on his less commercial projects?).

I love the Dan-man but was hoping Young would get this one. Or Alan Silvestri considering The Quick and the Dead is a fantastic score for a Raimi picture. I'd also be interested in Sam trying out Carter Burwell for a change of pace. Elfman is often over-exposed, especially with two Burton movies out next year. Give him some time off.

Looking forward to this one. Perhaps it will have some of the TERMINATOR SALVATION grooves going on. The film looks fun too.

First off,I'm glad Elfman and Raimi have patched things up. Something I thought would be impossible to happen after what Elfman said about Raimi. To me that's one of Spiderman 3's biggest flaws Which was not having Elfman scoring it. I think he would've done a lot better than Young (as well as Lurie and Debney) did.

Second how is Elfman overexposed. This year he has Restless (he actually scored that one last year) which was supposed to come out late last year or early this year. But was pushed for oscar season. Plus the film is an independent film that nobody will watch. It's already playing in select cities. and I haven't seen any tv spots. Also theres no news of cd release of Elfman's score. Then there's Real Steel which is his biggest movie this year.

Next year he's co-composing wth T Bone Burnett on The Hunger Games. The media makes a big deal out of T Bone than Elfman on this project. He's even the executive soundtrack producer for the film. I have a feeling Elfman might not contribute as much some think on that one which sucks. B/c I don't care for T Bone's music . No offense to him and his fans. Then there's MIIIB which I'm still skeptical about b/c Elfman has a lot on his plate that month (with MIIIB and Dark Shadows). And therefore might back out of MIIIB, which I don't want . In the fall he has Frankenweenie which I believe he's already started work on.

In 2013 (so far) he only has Raimi's Oz prequel on his schedule. That's a year in a half away. I really don't feel that he's overexposed. Plus I think it makes up for the lack of Elfman scores this year. To be honest Real Steel is the only film score he wrote this. B/c again he scored Restless last year.

Speaking of RS I'm glad this is getting a score release. I've been hungry for a new Elfman score all Summer. Something that this recent Summer was lacking indeed.

I'd say that the chances of that are....pretty good........

Never mind.

You people are forgetting that Forbidden Zone II is scheduled for next year as well. That'll probably be a big project for Elfman because his music for the first film is one of the biggest contributors to its cult appeal.

That film has been scheduled for AGES. You never know about Richard Elfman. He's not the most prolific director in the world, and his projects do take their time in materializing. But yeah -- I do hope brother Danny is involved in any possible sequels.

Empire magazine's review says "Danny Elfman's score lays on the soaring strings and choral work almost to parody levels". Obviously a criticism but it actually makes me look forward to the score more! I do hope there's some action material though, and that all the fight scenes aren't just set to songs.

Quite a sad day when "soaring strings and choral work" is considered criticism. Guess those people still have the next Tyler Bates score to look forward too. For me, I just want Real Steel even more now.
