God, THE SWARM is such a wonderful movie. Rarely does a movie this expensive, with this much talent on board, go so entertainingly wrong. How can you not love a movie with dialog like:

"Billions of dollars have been spent to make these nuclear plants safe.
Fail-safe! The odds against anything going wrong are astronomical, Doctor!"

"I appreciate that, Doctor. But let me ask you: In all your fail-safe
techniques, is there a provision for an attack by killer bees?!"

Or, another one of my favorites, when Michael Caine's character (with an obvious British accent) gets discovered in an American Nuclear Missile Base, with everybody either missing or dead. He's asked by a SWAT team member what he's doing there and how he got into the complex. His answer? "It's a complicated story--it starts a year ago--but let's skip that." Yeah, well, I'd try that should I ever find myself in that situation. "Let's skip that."
THE SWARM is one of those great comedies, like AIRPLANE. Except, it didn't try to be at the time.

I'm going from memory here, but I love the constant reference to the killer bees as "the Africans."

I think Widmark actually says, "The Africans have invaded Houston."

Speaking of which, all those names and Irwin couldn't fit in a black cast member? What, OJ was busy?

I'd rather watch The Swarm any day. McMurray, DeHavilland, and Ben Johnson in a love triangle, resolved in a fiery train crash that kills ALL OF THEM!? Jaws IV can't compete with that.

Touché, sir! smile

I'm sure Jerry Goldsmith was under no illusions this was a terrible film. But you ain't going to market your film/album with a comment like, "It's a turd but buy into it anyway".

Cheers

Well, you never know. Supposedly Goldsmith was really impressed by Supergirl - it was one of his favorite projects. His score to The Swarm certainly doesn't sound apathetic. But I doubt the album's quotes are genuine. They might have been Irwin Allen's recounting of the meeting. I'm amused by the story that after the movie bombed, Allen announced to his staff that anybody that ever mentioned "The Swarm" to him again would be fired on the spot!

Ladies and gentlemen, forget the swarm. The exaggerated claims are but mild compared to the liner notes taken from two Italian western CDs from the Claudio Fuiano stable.

"...An ex-sheriff wants revenge his father's death pursuiting through hot badlands. He'll win, but at the end his brother'll be killed...." (correct).

AND WAIT, THERE'S MORE..

"...Django, to revenge his wife killed by major Winchester Jack during the civil war, reaches with his new girlfriend Norma the mexican border, where the major's gang is achieving many crimes. Happy ending when Django'll kill "the villain"..." (correct)

I WIN!!!!

So why didn't those accursed killer bees fly into Irwin's office and sting him to death for making them look bad in the film?
