This unique score in Mr. Poledouris’ cannon, (his only true supernatural horror genre score), showcases the composer’s skill in crafting chilling, yet lush electronic soundscapes. THE GOLDEN CHILD: LIMITED EDITION (3-CD SET) LLLCD 1180
Music Composed and Conducted by John Barry
Music Score by Michel Colombier
Limited Edition of 5000 Units

La-La Land Records presents, in association with Paramount Pictures and Capitol Records, the premiere release of both John Barry’s unused score and Michel Colombier’s score to the 1986 Paramount Pictures action/adventure motion picture THE GOLDEN CHILD, starring Eddie Murphy, Charlotte Lewis, Charles Dance and directed by Michael Ritchie. Mr. Barry’s (FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, BODY HEAT, A VIEW TO A KILL, DANCES WITH WOLVES) unused orchestral score is simply put, wondrous -- a powerful, majestic work brimming with action, suspense and romance that strongly recalls the recently departed composer’s 80s Bond period while still retaining its own robust identity. Composer Michel Colombier’s (RUTHLESS PEOPLE, THE MONEY PIT, AGAINST ALL ODDS) score, only a portion of which has been previously released, is finally given its proper due here as well, showcasing the composer’s knack for traditional action scoring blended with the era’s contemporary, synth-based pop sound. Produced by Lukas Kendall and mastered by Mike Matessino, this comprehensive 3-Disc collection of music contains additional unreleased Barry cues, including the unused song “Dance A Little Closer” performed by none other than Randy Edelman! Along with Barry’s “Best Man In The World,” performed by Ann Wilson of Heart fame, all songs featured on the original 1986 soundtrack album are presented here, including tracks from such artists as Ratt, Ashford & Simpson, Meli’sa Morgan and others. Film music writer Jon Burlingame takes you behind the film’s duo of scores in his exclusive liner notes. A must for film music fans, this limited edition release of 5000 units showcases the work of two brilliant composers who remain with us through the timelessness of their talent.

Goldsmith’s full-throated western score to this lively female-driven adventure was his last in the genre and a fine example of his expertise within that realm. Produced by Nick Redman and mastered by Daniel Hirsch at D2 Mastering, this special remastered and expanded release includes more than 20 minutes of previously unreleased music and features in-depth liner notes from film music writer Jeff Bond, with new comments from director Jonathan Kaplan. Bless you LLL for releasing SPELLBINDER! It's such an oddity in Poledouris' filmography I never believed it would get released - yet here it is!

Spellbinder: fabulous - ordered.

A Certain Smile: also great, but will have to delay my order for a few weeks.

Thank god David "Crap" Fein isn't involved in either! :-)

Ordered both. The Newman was a no brainer. I'm also normally in for anything by Poledouris as well.

I'll be ordering the Newman, definitely. Closer to the ship date, though.

It's a little lost treasure IMHO (which is highly biased)...

There is some really cool stuff in this score including a love theme (that sadly there was little room for....)

Triva: Just before release, someone at the studio decided the film didn't need the first reel and it was chopped out of the film without the director knowing it.

So, the current version pretty much starts on what was REEL 2..

Basil wrote a Main Title that appears on the CD, but isn't in the film.

Interesting tidbits, Ford. I'd never even heard of SPELLBINDER before this release, but only listened to the first 10 seconds of the first sample before deciding to place my order. I'm looking forward to it.

First LLL congrats on the releases, it's nice to see more classic material get out there. Should make more than a few people happy.

Love the cover of Spellbinder, very catching and she looks beautiful. I find that the A Certain Smile cover reminds me of the early attempts at coloring black and white movies though from googling that's how the poster art was

http://www.timelessmoviemagic.co.uk/a-certain-smilevintage-1sheet-movie-posterrossano-brazzijoan-fontaine58-164-p.asp

Not sure about the music for either from the samples. I've certainly heard the ACS main title before & it's pleasant and I quite like the 80's style synth in SB (though seemed more in ambient underscore style). For the moment they're in the "would be nice to get" pile.

Btw I'm curious about why A Certain Smile is a 2 CD affair (though nice to see at a 1 CD price) given the content is so similar between the two. I presume you'se felt that the listening experience was different enough or was it a requirement?

New Newman! Wow!

Never thought this would see the light of day, and with the original tracks, even better!

Pure 50's Newman! What's not to like!

(Now let's see if you can go after other Newman scores from that time, like THE GIFT OF LOVE.)

Don't get me wrong: these are pretty trashy movies, but Newman's music is grand!!!!

(Or, for that matter, the oft-desired DIARY OF ANNE FRANK.....)

Very cool artwork for Spellbinder. As was the case with 'the sender', another score I'm looking forward to discover! I hope there are more gems like these to come from the 80's smile

Interesting tidbits, Ford. I'd never even heard of SPELLBINDER before this release, but only listened to the first 10 seconds of the first sample before deciding to place my order. I'm looking forward to it.

The film is currently available widescreen on Netflix Streaming. It's a well-crafted little horror movie that came and went without much fanfare, perhaps because it's more interested in suspenseful situations than blood and gore.

If memory serves, that first track on the CD - "The Witching Hour" - is used for the end credits, so the album arrangement isn't strictly film order.

If that makes for a better listening experience, which I think it will, it's fine with me.

As I posted on another thread, I can't believe this major announcement of Newman's score for A CERTAIN SMILE has slipped so far down in the stack.

A CERTAIN SMILE was an entertaining film of its day, but the score was exceptional (as the sound clips attest), and the LP record, particularly in the rare stereo version, was much sought after once.

The audio clips for this expanded CD sound wonderful---the stereo very pronounced---and the whole endeavor---at only $19.95 for 2 discs---is a real music value for you Golden Age fans.

I can't imagine anyone who really cares, not buying it.

As I recall, there wasn't much information on the original LP jacket and I've always assumed
A CERTAIN SMILE was one of the films caught in the AFM Strike of 1957-58.

Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to the orchestra and who conducted the score?

Kurt Graunke?

Lionel Newman?

Bernard Kaun?

This is definitely a must-have. I'm just waiting for other titles to be announced for a combination order.

I think it's sad that some of the truly essential Golden Age scores are moving that slow. I still can't believe that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" has been around for months - and there seems to be no demand for a re-issue. Really a sad situation...
