IMO John Barry's The Golden Child is superb but the film is so poor that it was unworthy of Barry's score. So maybe it's replacement was no bad thing. The main thing is that it has been released on CD.

Exactly my view. Colombier's score is ok in the film but very unlistenable on cd. Barry's is thematic, graceful, epic and is very listenable. Class.

Barry's score is nice, but Colombier's was the one I wanted since, you know, that's the one that was in the film and that I developed the attachment to. Barry's is certainly an enjoyable listen, but like I think somebody said elsewhere in the thread, it was nothing more than a curiosity piece to me.
Don't care much for Barry's score (except the song, which is OK-ish). But the Colombier is superb! The only reason I got this set.
I have a lot of respect for Michael Colombier but how the film makers thought that dumping Barry's score and replacing it with Colombier's effort would improve the movie is beyond me.
I suspect they knew they had a dud and going by the reaction of some of the audience at previews preyed that a new score would create a new movie.
The Golden Child was actually a box office hit, becoming the eighth highest grossing film of 1986. (Although clearly that was because of Eddie Murphy's star power at the time and not the score.)

Yup. It was a hit. It's also a wonderful adventure comedy film -- one of the best from the decade. And Eddie Murphy in top form! Colombier's funky score is just icing on the cake.

I like a lot of Eddie Murphy's films but this is one of his worst efforts IMO.

Don't rely too much on the numbers - stat's can always lead the reader in the wrong direction.
My wife and I went to see the film on its release ... partly because the plot-line was of interest to my wife (fantasy~sorcery, etc.) and largely - for me - because I was aware that John Barry was involved in the music score. In those pre-internet days we had to take what little information we could get and a new JB scored film, even knowing the score had been removed/replaced, was of interest. Neither of us was or is a fan of Eddie Murphy (this may have been our first exposure to him!).
I thought then - and still do - that M. Colombier's score was poor and I much preferred most of the songs on the album ... very unusual for me. Perhaps Mr. Barry's score wasn't suitable for such a youngster's film but at least it would have given the audience (such as us) something to enjoy whilst trying to watch the awful visuals.
Are the first three tracks (4M1R/2M2R, 2M1R, 12M1R) of Disc 3 the same as 4M1,2M2,2M1, 12M1 on disc 1 or not? B/c 12M1R doesn't sound that different from12M1.
I listened to the tracks. There's slight differences in 'em.
I managed to have some time to myself with the wife and kids out so found myself perusing my music collection and pulled this off the shelf. When I first received this it left me cold. I don't think I gave it a proper listen because holy cow now I love it. Both versions. Love Barry's 80's style and the 80's kid in me even digs Colombier's score. This was my first introduction to Colombier and though dated really enjoy it. Had a good time going through this post with this on in the background. Uh oh wife is back... Gotta turn off this "crazy depressing music" (according to the Mrs. and kids). Tata.
