British distributors Eureka Entertainment have officially announced and detailed their upcoming Blu-ray release of F. W. Murnau's legendary silent cinema horror classic Nosferatu (1922), expertly restored in Germany by the world-renowned Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung (FWMS). The release will be available for purchase on November 18th.

In addition to the standard Blu-ray release, Eureka Entertainment will also have available for purchase a Limited SteelBook Edition.

An iconic film of the German expressionist cinema, and one of the most famous of all silent movies, F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror continues to haunt — and, indeed, terrify — modern audiences with the unshakable power of its images. By teasing a host of occult atmospherics out of dilapidated set-pieces and innocuous real-world locations alike, Murnau captured on celluloid the deeply-rooted elements of a waking nightmare, and launched the signature "Murnau-style" that would change cinema history forever.

In this first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, a simple real-estate transaction leads an intrepid businessman deep into the superstitious heart of Transylvania. There he encounters the otherworldly Count Orlok — portrayed by the legendary Max Schreck, in a performance the very backstory of which has spawned its own mythology — who soon after embarks upon a cross-continental voyage to take up residence in a distant new land… and establish his ambiguous dominion. As to whether the count's campaign against the plague-wracked populace erupts from satanic decree, erotic compulsion, or the simple impulse of survival — that remains, perhaps, the greatest mystery of all in this film that's like a blackout…

Remade by Werner Herzog in 1979 (and inspiring films as diverse as Abel Ferrara's King of New York and The Addiction, and E. Elias Merhige's Shadow of the Vampire), F. W. Murnau's surreal 1922 cine-fable remains the original and landmark entry in the entire global tradition of "the horror film".

Special Features:
•Brand new high-definition restoration by Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung
•Two audio commentaries: one newly recorded by film historian David Kalat; the second by historian R. Dixon Smith and critic Brad Stevens
•The Language of Shadows, a 53-minute documentary on Murnau's early years and the filming of Nosferatu
•New video interview with BFI Film Classics Nosferatu author Kevin Jackson
•Newly translated English subtitles with original German intertitles
•More surprises to be revealed closer to release date!
•PLUS: a 56-page booklet featuring writings and rare imagery

I know this is a old thread but I would just like to make a correction for those who now might be reading it from the beginning, Island of lost souls-33- was a Paramount film not a Universal film.

Anyone have any idea whether the Blu-Ray of A TIME TO LOVE AND A TIME TO DIE will be released on Blu-Ray on Region 1, or All-Region, so that we over here can have an opportunity to get it?

Rozsa's score was originally released on lp, then later on a Japanese lp, then later on a Japanese CD, then, I think, Disques Cinemusique, available ton SAE, released it.

Beautiful score, gorgeous love theme, and stirring action cues, as only Rozsa can write them!

The film is also quite moving, with Gavin, and especially Lilo Pulver, delivering creditable performances. The novel's author, also author of the original ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, Erich Maria Remarque, also appears, as Gavin's former school professor.

And don't forget to look for Klaus Kinski in a chilling little role in a Gestapo office....

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have officially announced that they will release on Blu-ray Federico Fellini's Roma (1972), starring Britta Barnes, Peter Gonzales Falcon, Fiona Florence, Renato Giovannoli, Elisa Mainardi, and Anna Magnani. The release will be available for purchase on February 17th.

One of the maestro Federico Fellini's greatest '70s works (between Satyricon and The Clowns and Amarcord), Roma [Rome] erupts volcanically as a state-of-the-world pronouncement on what was not only happening within Rome at the tide of the hippies' organic birth and the post-Boom-set that made up his characters of the 1960s films, but also where, and how, his city would move feverishly forward into one of potential futures.

As Fellini himself travels with his crew to document the ring-road circling Rome, with all the natural diversions that might inherently divert a traditional film shoot, we move into episodes that chart the wartime difficulties of Roman life across those fleeting times that chronicle love and life within the modern-day Rome-time, themselves pitted against the archaeological vestiges of the great city, — and the Catholic church rears its dominance, and we come into a midpoint that positions itself, indeed, between the memory-cinema of Satyricon and Amarcord.

One of the great and bountiful color-spectacles of Fellini's cinema, almost leapt off toward from the moment of Giulietta of the Spirits, Fellini's Roma remains a passionate testament both to the city that finally claimed him as its son after he left small Rimini, and to the final stage of cinema that he himself would work till the day he died.

Special Features:
•Gorgeous restored 1080p HD transfer of the film
•Outtakes from the film
•More to be announced closer to the release date
•36-PAGE BOOKLET featuring the words of Fellini, and more!

Eureka! Entertainment have announced the release of Wake in Fright, the legendary, long-sought-after Australian film, released theatrically at the BFI Southbank and cinemas nationwide in the UK & Eire and for the first time on home video in the UK.

"Have a drink, mate? Have a fight, mate? Have a taste of dust and sweat, mate? There's nothing else out here." Balanced on a knife-edge between social realism and existential horror, this disturbing, subversive portrayal of Australia's cultural underbelly failed to find a wide audience on its original release, but has since become established as a seminal cornerstone of the Australian cinema.

A middle-class schoolteacher, stuck in a government-enforced teaching post in an arid backwater, stops off in the mining town of Bundanyabba on his way home for the Christmas holidays. Discovering a local gambling craze that may grant him the financial independence to move back to Sydney for good, the opportunity proves irresistible. But the bad decisions are just beginning and a reliance on local standards of hospitality in "the Yabba" may take him on a path darker than ever expected.

One of the many triumphs in director Ted Kotcheff's career, Wake in Fright effortlessly sustains the quality of a sun-baked nightmare, with a relentless forward drive and outstanding performances by Donald Pleasance, Gary Bond, Sylvia Kay, and Chips Rafferty in his final role. A brutal, gripping dissection of the limits of masculinity and amorality to stand alongside Straw Dogs, A Clockwork Orange, and Deliverance, it remains a stunning entry in the envelope-pushing cinema of the early 1970s.

Following a UK & Eire theatrical release on 7 March 2014, it will be released in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition as part of Eureka! Entertainment's award-winning The Masters of Cinema Series on 31 March 2014.

DUAL FORMAT SPECIAL FEATURES:

- New high-definition 1080p presentation of the film, from the 2009 restoration
- Audio commentary with director Ted Kotcheff and editor Anthony Buckley
- A selection of video pieces, including new interviews and rare behind-the-scenes footage
- Original US Outback TV spot
- Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hearing-impaired
- PLUS: A booklet featuring writing on the film, its restoration, rare imagery, and more!

Schaffner's The War Lord (1965)m, starring Charlton Heston, Richard Boone, Rosemary Forsyth, and Guy Stockwell. The release will be available for purchase on April 14th.

Great film & fantastic soundtrack, so nice to be able to buy this in HD. The last couple of bars in the trailer sound like they were borrowed from Spartacus to me.

Do you guys realize that they're releasing A TIME TO LOVE AND A TIME TO DIE, with an "isolated music and effects track" by one of our favorite composers, the incomparable Miklos Rozsa?
..

The isolated music and effects track was also on Eureka's 2009 DVD release (and frankly I didn't find the Blu-ray a hugely worthwhile improvement over the DVD).

The isolated track isn't at all a satisfactory way to listen to Rozsa's music because the sound effects are frequent and extremely loud, added to which there's not much (if any) music in the film which isn't already on the OST album.

What's really wanted is for Universal to release the film on Blu-ray with the original stereo soundtrack (the Eureka is mono).

Well, Heston did mention Spartacus in his narrated list of borrowings, so a few bars from the same won't make that much of a difference. Kind of wraps up the trailer with a borrowed sense of epic.

I recently received my copy of Eureka!s edition of Billy Wilder's "The Lost Weekend," and can't begin to express my disappointment. It's surely the worst-looking Blu-ray I've ever seen, and vastly inferior to Eureka!s "Double Indemnity." Granted, Universal doesn't have original element for most, if not all, of the pre-1948 Paramount titles they own, but a careful transfer of "Weekend" probably could've yielded results similar to "Indemnity"s had the label really taken the pains to do so.

The Blu-ray is to be avoided.

I don't see much difference in picture quality between Eureka's THE LOST WEKEND and DOUBLE INDEMNITY but I think they are both disappointing and make me wonder what was the point in my upgrading them from the DVD versions. Of course, as you say, it all depends on what original elements are available. Sony's HD restoration of ON THE WATERFRONT, for example, looks vastly better than the DVD.

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have announced that they will release on Blu-ray Fritz Lang's silent masterpiece Frau im Mond a.k.a. Woman in the Moon (1929). The release will be available for purchase on August 25th.

Frau im Mond. [Woman in the Moon.] is: (a) The first feature-length film to portray space-exploration in a serious manner, paying close attention to the science involved in launching a vessel from the surface of the earth to the valleys of the moon. (b) A tri-polar potboiler of a picture that manages to combine espionage tale, serial melodrama, and comic-book sci-fi into a storyline that is by turns delirious, hushed, and deranged. (c) A movie so rife with narrative contradiction and visual ingenuity that it could only be the work of one filmmaker: Fritz Lang.

In this, Lang's final silent epic, the legendary filmmaker spins a tale involving a wicked cartel of spies who co-opt an experimental mission to the moon in the hope of plundering the satellite's vast (and highly theoretical) stores of gold. When the crew, helmed by Willy Fritsch and Gerda Maurus (both of whom had previously starred in Lang's Spione), finally reach their impossible destination, they find themselves stranded in a lunar labyrinth without walls — where emotions run scattershot, and the new goal becomes survival.

A modern Daedalus tale which uncannily foretold Germany's wartime push into rocket-science, Frau im Mond. is as much a warning-sign against human hubris as it is a hopeful depiction of mankind's potential. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present in a Dual Format (Blu-ray + DVD) special edition the culmination of Fritz Lang's silent cinema, restored to its near-original length.

Special Features: •Gorgeous 1080p transfer on the Blu-ray of the F. W. Murnau-Stiftung restoration
•Original German intertitles with newly-translated optional English subtitles
•The First Scientific Science-Fiction Film – a German documentary about Frau im Mond. made by Gabriele Jacobi [15:00]
•36-page booklet which includes a newly revised analysis by Michael E. Grost on the film, and on Fritz Lang's body of work as a whole — and more!

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have officially announced that they will release on Blu-ray Busby Berkeley's The Gang's All Here (1943), starring Alice Faye, Carmen Miranda, Phil Baker, and Benny Goodman. The release will be available for purchase on September 15th.

The iconic director-choreographer Busby Berkeley's first full-length film in Technicolor is well established as being perhaps the most visually stunning spectacle of any Hollywood musical. But to focus on this risks overlooking its exuberant performances, gleeful humour, sensational music and glowing romance, amidst countless other pleasures.

A young soldier's fast-struck love affair with a New York City nightclub singer, despite his long-standing betrothal to a wealthy childhood friend, provides the catalyst for this dizzying parade of home-front melodrama, comic set-pieces and mind-boggling musical numbers (including 'The Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat' and 'The Polka-Dot Polka').

Featuring some of the most popular musical stars of its day, including Alice Faye, the incomparable Carmen Miranda, and the legendary Benny Goodman, along with brilliantly funny supporting turns from Edward Everett Horton, Eugene Pallette, and Charlotte Greenwood, The Gang's All Here is an outlandishly surprising classic from one of the Hollywood dream factory's most influential innovators.

Special Features:
New high-definition 1080p presentation
English subtitles for the deaf and hearing-impaired
New & exclusive full-length audio commentary with critics Glenn Kenny and Farran Smith Nehme and film historian Ed Hulse
The documentary Busby Berkeley: A Journey with a Star
A deleted scene from the film
Trailer
A 36-PAGE BOOKLET featuring essays on the film by critics David Cairns and Karina Longworth, and more!

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have announced that they will add a number of titles to their Blu-ray catalog between September and December. Amongst them are Sijun Suzuki's Youth of the Beast, D.W. Griffith's Intolerance, Raymond Bernard's Les Misérables, and Fritz Lang's Spione.

On 20 October 2014, joining existing Fellini films Roma, Il Bidone and City of Women on the label, Eureka will be releasing a new digitally restored version of The Clowns on Blu-ray in a Dual Format (Blu-ray and DVD) edition. The film reflects Fellini's childhood obsession with clowns, exploring deeper human conditions that resonate through various clowns who vary from a local sex-crazed hobo, a midget nun, to a mutilated Mussolini disciple.

A week later on 27 October 2014, Youth of the Beast shall be unleashed in a Dual Format (Blu-ray and DVD) edition. Jo Shisido's raw performance and Seijun Suzuki's stylish cinematic artistry complement one another perfectly. Out of the mass-produced array of Japanese action films, this movie stands out like a radiant gem. Based on the hard-boiled Japanese novel "Man Hunt" written by Haruhiko Oyabu, Suzuki's visceral depiction transports the viewer into a merciless world of crime.

The final Monday of the month will also see the release in a Dual Format (Blu-ray and DVD) edition of Blacula – The Complete Collection starring Pam Grier, the 1972 American Blaxploitation horror film (Blacula) produced for American International Pictures which became one of the top grossing films of the year, inspiring a sequel (Scream Blacula Scream) and a small wave of Blaxploitation themed horror films. The eternally cool William Marshall puts a fresh spin on the age-old legend of the vampire, condemned to wander the earth with an insatiable lust for blood.

Expected later in the quarter, Fritz Lang's penultimate silent film, Spione [Spies] will receive its worldwide premiere on Blu-ray in a Dual Format (Blu-ray and DVD) edition as part of the Masters of Cinema Series. Spione is a flawlessly constructed labyrinthine spy thriller. Hugely influential, Lang's famous passion for meticulous detail combines with masterful storytelling and editing skills to form a relentless story of intrigue, espionage, and blackmail.

Diary of a Lost Girl [Tagebuch einer Verlorenen] traces the journey of a young woman from the pit of despair to the moment of personal awakening. Directed with virtuoso flair by the great G. W. Pabst, Diary of a Lost Girl represents the final pairing of the filmmaker with screen icon Louise Brooks, mere months after their first collaboration in the now-legendary Pandora's Box [Die Büchse der Pandora]. Diary of a Lost Girl will be released for the very first time anywhere in the world on Blu-ray in a Dual Format (Blu-ray and DVD) edition as part of the Masters of Cinema Series.

The Thief of Bagdad, one of the most imaginative of all silent movies, is a glittering Arabian Nights adventure fantasy set in the city of Bagdad. Douglas Fairbanks plays a handsome rogue of a thief whose heart is stolen by the beautiful daughter of the Caliph. The Thief of Bagdad will be released for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray as part of the Masters of Cinema Series in a stunning 2K restoration, featuring a magnificent score from maestro Carl Davis conducting the Phiharmonia Orchestra.

From one of the greatest little-known directors of all time, Raymond Bernard's nearly five hour tour de force that is Les Misérables is widely considered to be the greatest adaptation of the story. With unforgettable performances and stunning art direction, Les Misérables will be released on Blu-ray in a Dual Format edition as part of the Masters of Cinema Series.

Last, but not least, from Ancient Babylon and Biblical Judea to Medieval Paris and Modern America, four stories of intolerance and inhumanity interweave to form an amazing spectacle that gains momentum as it moves towards a powerful and memorable climax. D.W. Griffith's masterpiece Intolerance restored in HD will be available on Blu-ray in a stunning 2K restoration for the first time in the UK as part of the Masters of Cinema Series.

Managing Director of Eureka Entertainment, Ron Benson stated "New restorations and home viewing and Blu-ray premières abound - we continue our quest to release the very finest in world cinema, using the very best available materials, all with a meticulous attention to detail."

Further details for the November and December releases will be announced later in the year.
