Flipping randomly through my CD collection today made me realize how many truly great scores have been written for movies based on Stephen King novels. Examples: -Carrie (Pino Donaggio) -The Dead Zone (Michael Kamen) -Cujo (Charles Bernstein) -Misery (Marc Shaiman) -Needful Things (Patrick Doyle) -The Dark Half (Christopher Young) -The Shawshank Redemption (Thomas Newman) -Apt Pupil (John Ottman) -The Green Mile (Thomas Newman) Any other cool King scores?

Walther Carlos score from The Shining (only two tracks). They have only been released on LP, I think it was a Warner release. But the greatest Stephen King score is "Needfull Things" by Patrick Doyle. NP. Jerry Goldsmith live in concert

Needful Things is killer. If you don't have it, GET IT. Shaun

but hands down worst King film score has to be ACDC's work on Maximum Overdrive. Joe Hi, Sheriff. I do really agree. Maximum Overdrive was nothing but crap (I do also hate the movie!) NEEDFULL THINGS is still no. 1! (I got my japanese SLC copy signed by Patrick Doyle at the Vlandern Film Festival the day after the Hans Zimmer concert in Belgium.

Can't believe no one has mentioned it yet: NEEDFUL THINGS (Patrick Doyle) Uh, I mentioned it in my first post.

Without question, Pino Donaggio's score for "Carrie".

I agree with Senor Maher. (Oh and uh, by the way, John---I finally got around to hearing Donaggio's DRESSED TO KILL. So I now understand why it's your all-time fave score. You also said that you got the impression that Donaggio was musically mocking the movie's characters. I haven't seen the movie. But something tells me that Donaggio might be stylistically narrow-minded. His ubiquitous soaring strings might be stylistically inappropriate for certain movie scenes.) And I can easily understand why Sheriff Joe dislikes Donaggio. Let's face it---Donaggio is an Italian cliche of a composer. From the 101-strings school of Italianate melodicism. There's too much of those soaring strings and not enough instrumental variety & textural craftsmanship. But nevertheless, the first 90 seconds of the Theme from CARRIE is nothing short of a miracle.

I just picked up my first score to a Stephen King flick (CUJO) and I've begun reading King's works lately, starting with some of his short stories and now Carrie, so I figured I'd revive this 14 year-old thread. Any more opinions? What are the must-have scores from films based on Stephen King's stories and novels?

SHAWSHANK still stands heads and shoulders above everyone else, IMO. But some other great scores for King adaptations include CARRIE, CHILDREN OF THE CORN, FIRESTARTER, THE RUNNING MAN, THE DARK HALF, NEEDFUL THINGS, DOLORES CLAIBORNE, THE GREEN MILE. That's mostly about album experiences, though. If we include scores that are very effective in the movie, but that don't necessarily work that well for me (on album), one would need to include stuff like PET SEMATARY, THE SHINING, THE MIST, DREAMCATCHER and others.
