Its from Black Sunday though (Katia's theme). Its mentioned on the sleeve so it would seem the film came first. A Black Sunday promotional 7" was also released by AIP at the time featuring Katia's theme on one side and the title theme on the other, played on piano with loads of reverb. I see the lable mentions " featured in the capitol records album Jewels of the sea" so it would be interesting to know what came first after all. My favorites from the recent releases: House of Usher Black Sabbath (I really like this one a lot) Sadismo (not all good but fascinating) Marco Polo (I always liked the Barbarians a lot and this is not far behind that one, but not quite there either IMO) I personally only discovered Lex Baxter's Exotica albums because I was looking for his soundtracks. Not knowing about his standing in that field, I remember being somewhat suprised picking up a copy of Caribbean Moonlight. Then I noticed how macabre that record really is. Its very luring and soothing but its very dark too. I quickly became a fan of his exotica. Daniel Clowes once mentioned a Les Baxter track in a comic of his (lloyd llewellyn). The track doesn't exist but the title he came up with was very nice, something like "the briny smell of love, the salty taste of death." The theme I'm thinking about is the last track on Side B of "Jewels of the Sea", as you mention. How did I recognise it? Because I've got the old LP of BLACK SABBATH (the Tony Thomas release, black and white photo of Boris K on the cover, thick white border), and I was pretty sure until now that the track on "Jewels of the Sea" was from that... Wasn't there a mislabeling on some of the old Baxter film score releases? Could my BLACK SABBATH really be BLACK SUNDAY? And why did I believe that the track in question was NOT from BLACK SUNDAY, or MASK OF THE DEMON or whatever you want to call it? Because I have never heard the Baxter score! At least I don't think I have, unless my BLACK SABBATH is BLACK SUNDAY. But I have seen the film (BLACK SUNDAY), however it was the European cut with the original score by Roberto Nicolosi. So what's up here? Now, go back and read all that again. Then try to answer Jim Doherty's question about the Spanish DRACULA. Everything points to the fact that the "Jewels of the Sea" track is from BLACK SUNDAY. You all told me that anyway. Still don't know how I'd heard it before... Anyone remember the details of the supposed mix-up between the titles BLACK SUNDAY and BLACK SABBATH? And the weirdest thing is, the text on the sleeve describes the movie with all its segments in detail. Yesterday night, after reading up on what has been said here on Les Baxter, I got in the mood and listened to House of Usher again ( nice write up you did on your listening experience) and at some point vocals came in and I swear I heard it was Yma Sumac! I'd spent 30 years listening to the Tony Thomas LP of what I thought was BLACK SABBATH... and it's actually BLACK SUNDAY??? There's a Blu-ray release of the 1956 The Black Sleep (scored by Baxter) with audio commentary by MMM's David Schecter.
