On August 1, British distributors Optimum Home Entertainment will release on Blu-ray Charles Crichton's recently restored classic The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) to celebrate the film's 60th anniversary. We have the restored trailer now that will be included on this Blu-ray release (see below). Special features: Intro from Martin Scorsese Restoration comparison Trailer Behind the Scenes stills gallery And more... Henry Holland (Alec Guinness) has worked faithfully for 20 years as a bank transfer agent for the delivery of gold bullion. A shy retiring man, completely inconsequential to his employers, he has long dreamt of a way to execute his plan of the perfect gold robbery - the only catch being how to move the gold on once stolen. One day he befriends Pendlebury (Stanley Holloway), a maker of souvenirs. Holland remarks that, with Pendlebury's smelting equipment, one could forge the gold into harmless-looking toy Eiffel Towers and smuggle the gold from England into France. Soon after, the two plant a story to gain the services of professional criminals Lackery (Sid James) and Shorty (Alfie Bass). Together, the four plot their crime, leading to unexpected twists and turns. http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=6924

Studio Canal will release a Double Play edition of director Alexander Mackendrick's The Man in the White Suit (1951), starring Alec Guinness, Joan Greenwood and Cecil Parker. The release, which will be part of the studio's Vintage Classics series, will be available for purchase online and in shops across the United Kingdom on November 5th. Technical specs and supplemental features to be included with this release are yet to be detailed. Eccentric Sidney Stratton (Alec Guiness) is a laboratory cleaner in a textile factory, who invents a material that will neither wear out nor become dirty. Initially hailed as a great discovery, Sidney's astonishing invention is suffocated by the management when they realise that if it never wears out, people will only ever have to purchase one suit of clothing. Note: Blu-ray.com has a review for Studio Canal's release of Alexander Mackendrick's Whisky Galore!, also part of the studio's Vintage Classics series, http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Whisky-Galore-Blu-ray/24494/#Review http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=9211

Studiocanal have announced a new special edition DVD and first ever Blu-ray release of The Man in the White Suit. Available from 19 November 2012, this Ealing classic has been restored for the centenary of its director Alexander Mackendrick's birth. Sidney Stratton (Alec Guinness, Kind Hearts & Coronets, The Ladykillers, Star Wars), a genius inventor, develops a fabric that never gets dirty or wears out. Thinking that his invention will be welcomed with open arms by the garment industry, he is shocked when both manufacturers and unions alike try to suppress it. Nevertheless, Sidney is determined to put his invention on the market, forcing the clothing factory bigwigs to resort to more desperate measures... Also starring Joan Greenwood (Kind Hearts & Coronets, Whisky Galore!), Cecil Parker (The Lady Vanishes, The Ladykillers, I was Monty’s Double) and Michael Gough (Batman, The Horse’s Mouth, The Small Back Room), the film was BAFTA-nominated for Best Film and Best British Film, and Oscar-nominated for Best Screenplay. Newly restored for this release, extras include:•Revisiting The Man in the White Suit - Brand new featurette •Behind the scenes stills gallery •Restoration comparison •Feature HOH subtitles •Trailer Notes on the restoration - The Man in the White Suit restoration was completed at Pinewood Studios in high definition using the best original film materials available. After rigorous assessment, the best material for restoration, which was used was the fine-grain inter-positive and scanned in 2k resolution. Over 100 hours were spent to ensure a thorough clean up was performed removing dirt, scratches, warps, tears or replacing torn or missing frames and improving stability issues for the digital restoration, ensuring the general look of the film does not stray too far from the original release. http://film.thedigitalfix.com/content/id/76049/the-main-in-the-white-suit-this-november.html

Studiocanal have announced a new special edition DVD and first ever Blu-ray release of It Always Rains on Sunday. Available from 12 November 2012, this oft-overlooked Ealing classic has steadily grown in stature as one of the earliest and best examples of British film noir. Based on the novel by Arthur La Bern (also the original author of Hitchcock’s Frenzy), the film is a gritty drama that plays out in the rain drenched streets of the East End one Sunday. Directed by Robert Hamer (Kind Hearts and Coronets, Pink String & Sealing Wax), It Always Rains on Sunday stars Googie Withers in a towering performance as Rose Sandigate, a bitter Bethnal Green housewife stuck in a dull marriage, hemmed in on all sides by well-meaning but nosey neighbours and jealous of the burgeoning social life of her precocious stepdaughter. Her dreary world is turned upside down by the sudden re-appearance of an old flame, Tommy (played by Googie’s real-life husband John McCallum), on the run from the police having escaped from prison. Digitally remastered for this release, extras include:•Coming in from the Rain: Revisiting It Always Rains on Sunday - Brand new featurette looking back at the film •Brand new locations featurette •Behind the scenes stills gallery •Original trailer Notes on the re-mastering: It Always Rains on Sunday has been digitally remastered from two nitrate fine grain positives, dating from 1947. Repair has been carried out by the BFI National Archive on picture and sound as appropriate, to present the film authentically on modern digital formats. http://film.thedigitalfix.com/content/id/76050/it-always-rains-on-sunday-this-november.html

Two more titles announced for January. Alongside the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Titfield Thunderbolt in January, Studiocanal have announced the UK DVD release of a further two digitally remastered Ealing titles. They are: Nowhere to Go - 14 January 2013 - Directed by Seth Holt (The Nanny and Blood From The Mummy's Tomb), NOWHERE TO GO is a stylish, grimy tale of deception and betrayal. A rare, late excursion into film noir for Ealing Studios, scripted by first-time director Holt and critic Ken Tynan. This digitally remastered release features the full 100 minute version of the film (on its original release MGM cut it by 15 minutes in order to fit it into a double bill). Also on the disc is a brand new featurette including interviews with Ealing experts and crew members. Dance Hall - 21 January 2013 - Story by Alexander Mackendrick (Ladykillers, The Man in the White Suit, Whisky Galore!) and from the director of The Lavender Hill Mob and The Titfield Thunderbolt, DANCE HALL is a romantic melodrama centred round the life and loves of four working-class women who spend their Saturday nights at the Chiswick Palais dancing to the music of Ted Heath's Big Band. Extras on this digitally remastered release include a brand new Making Of featurette, a restoration comparison and a trailer. http://film.thedigitalfix.com/content/id/76146/more-ealing-in-january.html
