I'm glad I was able to win the bid for it on eBAY, but after the EUROS conversion it ended up costing me more than what I paid for the 11-CD set of Michel Legrand soundtracks (Legrand/Demy Écoutez le Cinéma) I just bought from Amazon France, so maybe if I had it to do over again....

The expansion has a few nice extra moments, but the original 35-40 minute MCA LP (and Varese CD) re-recorded programme is my 'go to' whenever I listen to this score.
Sometimes, less is more.

I will admit that even though it's very good stuff, I do tire of listening to the 2 CD complete score -- somewhere in the Morton Stevens section, though. I can't fathom why Goldsmith fans would find the new Goldsmith material anything other than essential. It's fantastic! I especially love that section when it switches from the Roman march to the cool "ethnic" feeling section with dulcimers or cimbaloms or whatever...
Just again for the Morton Stevens fans here -- I do love the Stevens disc too, and it probably suffers a bit from 1) coming second after you've already been listening for 75 minutes and 2) coming after the material by my favorite film composer of all time.
I'll also point out that it has a lot of ideas not represented at all on Goldsmith's brief 37 minute re-recording.

I thought Stevens did a magnificent job, and it's a shame that he never got the big feature films like his friend Goldsmith, though this comes close.

Same here. This is one of my first Goldsmith albums and I love it. The orchestra (NPO) is a larger size and the engineering is better, despite the MCA tape hiss. We're also lucky this came prior to those unfortunate years when Goldsmith started recording so much in Hungary. I'm glad to have the OST recording, but like Capricorn One, I find myself typically reaching for the album recording when I want to listen to it.

Yeah, especially if you admire Morton Stevens, it boggles my mind that anyone would think the 37 minute album recording is sufficient for this epic score. Would we be happy with 37 minutes of Ben-Hur or The Ten Commandments? I would think not (aside from Thor, and even he might think that running time too short). So why on earth are people perfectly satisfied with it for Masada, which is a 2.5 hour score in complete form, with very little redundancy...I would argue less than either of the two epic scores I mentioned, actually!

Yeah, but he did have some luck with features working for Jerry Lewis and then there was ONE MAN JURY, THE RAIDERS, WILD AND WONDERFUL, ACT OF PIRACY, THE SPY WITH MY FACE, just to name a few.
But Mort will always be remembered as the "Television Music Man" with scores from HAWAII FIVE-O, POLICE WOMAN and GUNSMOKE and for his great TV MOVIE and Mini-Series work.
Great stuff all around...such a wonderful, underrated Composer!...:-)

I have the LP of the album recording, which is worthwhile as well. I think it may be a stronger, more concise presentation overall of the Goldsmith material, but as I recall there were troubles with its CD transfer. But the original soundtrack recording on Intrada is fantastic, and the Morton Stevens stuff from the finale is exciting, then chilling.

Sounds incredible! I'll be looking for the other third of the JG "Israel Trilogy", "The Going Up of David Level", next (HUGE enthusiast of QBVII btw).
