Hey guys... I was seeing the movie the other night, and didn`t remember how beatiful this work by Basil Poledouris is...

Free Willy was my first soundtrack, back in 1993... I remember findind the "background music" much more interesting, emotional, and cinematic than the boring songs side of the audio cassette.

Do yo think it may be time for an expanded edition??? The regular release don`t give it justice.

Definately, and Freewilly 2 is urgent need of an expansion too. There's some incredible new themes in the sequel. I hope one of our favourite labels is listening!!

This score - and LASSIE to a lesser degree - is the litmus test for the true Poledouris fan.

Everybody loves CONAN, LONESOME DOVE, ROBOCOP, HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, FAREWELL TO THE KING, etc. They're rich, powerful, masculine scores filled with memorable themes.

But Poledouris is almost never given credit for his versatility, whereas Goldsmith is praised on a daily basis for it.

The same man who scored CONAN THE BARBARIAN also scored the low-budget AIDS drama IT'S MY PARTY with a mere piano, and performed it himself. He scored the intimate Vietnam drama THE WAR AT HOME, KIMBERLY, AMANDA, and the aforementioned LASSIE.

And... The Willy.

Anyone who loves his scores for BIG WEDNESDAY and WIND should also be a fan of this score. There's a beautiful seafaring melody right at the top, and it's got a couple of terrific action cues. It's also reminiscent of HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER with the use of a choir and synths.

So would I buy an expanded edition? Yeah, you bet I would.

I never picked up the original records for this and the sequels (which I've never seen), nor Lassie, but I've always been interested in Poledouris' more introspective side (I think "Jack Surfs Alone" from Big Wednesday is one of his best cues).

I could take or leave the Willy, but Lassie is a gorgeous score. Only other Poledouris score I have is the OST for Conan The Barbarian, but I hope to remedy that someday.

The Free Willy scores are all beautiful, including the third by Cliff Eidelman. I wonder if Varese would consider a box set of all three in complete form as they did for the Karate Kid scores. They did the original album for the Eidelman, and they've expanded UMG stuff (like the first two scores) in the past if I'm not mistaken. All three scores are ripe for expansion, because everything released of them fits on only one CD with room to spare: the first and third scores both have less than half an hour out there, and the second score has only about ten minutes (three tracks), though I may actually prefer it to Poledouris's original.

Well of coarse all this depends on who owns what and where and how much.
I don't often endorse (not that my endorsement matters) expanded albums. Mostly because there is a constant barrage of these requests. It just gets ridiculous after a while.
Having said that I think this is a case I feel an expanded edition would be justified. Neither the first nor the second film had very much of the Basil Poledouris's score on the album. Feel especially jilted on the second one. Though the third film doesn't need expansion, if it was done by in a set of some kind it would be icing on the cake.

Yes, "Free Willy" definitely deserves a complete score release sans the songs. And I'm glad "Lassie" is being mentioned. It's actually my favourite Poledouris score. Yes, even more than "Conan the Barbarian". Deal with it.big grin

Ever since I saw Free Willy in a movie theater, as a kid, I remember the music quite vividly. Now, maybe it's because I saw it so many times when I was young, but I still love the movie, and I think the music is a great part of that. You only have to look at the opening scene to see what Poledouris' score does for the movie. First the majestic music to, what basically amounts to a couple of minutes of killer whales doing the same thing (thought beautifully photographed), and then the terror and even sadness of Willy being captured. Most of this is accomplished through the music. Yeah, Basil Poledouris certainly knew how to make a mediocre movie seem better, and I wish there was more of his music released.

A complete Lassie would be nice too...for that matter I could probably come up with a full score of Poledouris scores that beg for complete editions! smile

Also agree that Free Willy 2 is the most necessary expansion since so little of the lovely score was released on that crappy album (luckily I found it in a used bargain bin for $.99)

Just listening to the album..
I first saw the movie in the theaters too when I was a kid. What memories...
And how i loved the music...
A nice combination of synths and orchestra.

I hope a complete score is on the works.

I haven't seen the sequels, nor listened to the scores.

Wow, this would be a great one too expand. One of my favorite Poledouris scores. I love the syth work. That main theme is pretty iconic.

I don't think you need to rush and see the sequels, but if you enjoyed the first score you *need* to at least give the second a listen. It's even better, honestly. Come to think of it I guess you do need to see the first sequel since you can only get 10 minutes of its score on CD...

And if you like Cliff Eidelman at all (I love him almost as much as Basil) you should really give Free Willy 3 a shot too (it's wonderful, though I prefer his Ocean Men).

Is this the year we might finally see Free Willy freed? The rest of the great music by Poledouris (and Eidelman, please, Varese) is what I'm talking about, of course. I really hope so...

I'm all for it. Poledouris was a master of long-lined melody and passion.

I'd absolutely purchase expanded versions of the first three movies! I was actually listening to the second one the other day and was disappointed at how short the second score is.

Going through my stacks the other day and saw Basil's name on Red October, thought how I missed new works from him. Free Willy are those kind of pure pastoral nature scores we have too few of these days. I agree that they would be an excellent box set, though it sounds more like something that LLL would do, if VS could let go of it.

Never heard any of the Free Willy scores. I saw Michael Jackson's name and just avoided them.

I would like to see a 2 disc set of FW 1 & 2 by Poledouris.

Just a thought, suggestion, comment, request...dream.
