The finale is still one of the most brilliant ways to end a series. So clever. Unfortunately I remember that "Entertainment Tonight" stupidly spoiled the ending in the episode they ran just minutes before Newhart's finale aired, which kind of ruined it for me, but I hope there were many other people out there who got to enjoy it!

Great theme, although I like THE BOB NEWHART SHOW better as a series.

Also, according to Wikipedia, the footage in the opening credits is all leftover B-roll from ON GOLDEN POND. Interesting.

I grew up with the show. Instrumental TV themes are some of the earliest music I can remember hearing as a young kid that affected me deeply emotionally. Newhart, Taxi, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere all come to mind. I tried to watch The Bob Newhart Show in reruns later on but it seemed like a super-dated '70s relic. Newhart was pure '80s all the way with the yuppie Steph and Michael, the cartoonishly buffoonish Larry, Daryl and Daryl, and Newhart's fantastic deadpan performance anchoring it all. It starts off slow though, with none of the aforementioned characters being regulars until season 3 and 2 main characters from season 1 being dumped. It took 6 years for them to release season 2 on DVD, probably because season 1 did not have all the popular characters in place yet. I didn't realize until right now that seasons 2 through 4 were finally put out last year! I did watch Bob when it was on in the '90s. I was also a comic nerd at the time, but the show just didn't click for me. I must have given up on it before the revamp, because I don't remember that. The revamp only lasted 8 episodes before cancellation.
