There are reports online that Elisabeth Sladen has passed away. I hope they are not true, but it's starting to look that way.

This is very sad and depressing. When I saw the early episodes of Sarah Jane Adventures, I couldn't believe she was 60, as she looked younger than her actual age, and so vital. It's a shocker.

It's been confirmed from multiple sources now.

Her autobiography is scheduled to come out this summer. http://amzn.to/hyH2PH

It is with great sadness that we have to report that the actress Elisabeth Sladen - forever known to us as the Doctor's best friend, Sarah Jane Smith - has died. The news, which was broken on Twitter earlier today, has since been confirmed via Twitter by Doctor Who Magazine and by BBC News.

Born in Liverpool in February 1948, Sladen was cast as intrepid journalist Sarah Jane by producer Barry Letts in 1973, making her debut in The Time Warrior, and appeared alongside Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor throughout his final season in the role. Smith was present when the Doctor regenerated into his Fourth incarnation in Planet of the Spiders, and Sladen's partnership with Pertwee's successor Tom Baker went on to become one of the most iconic Doctor-companion partnerships in Doctor Who's long history.

Despite choosing to leave the programme in 1976, with an emotional departure scene at the conclusion of the serial The Hand of Fear, Smith later stated in interviews that although she had left Sarah Jane, "Sarah Jane never left me". Although she declined producer John Nathan-Turner's offer to come back as Sarah to bridge the changeover between the Fourth and Fifth Doctors, she returned to the role for the 1981 pilot programme K9 and Company and for a guest appearance in the 1983 20th anniversary celebration The Five Doctors, and continued to appear in radio and audio stories, documentaries and at fan conventions across the following two decades.

With the return of Doctor Who to television in 2005, however, Sladen unexpectedly found herself back on BBC One screens when she made a guest appearance in the 2006 episode School Reunion, where Sarah was emotionally reunited with the Doctor, now played by David Tennant. The character, and Sladen's performance, proved to be as popular as ever, if not more so, and the following year she was given a starring role in her own spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures. This won Sladen and her character a whole new legion of fans, both young and old, and continued the adventures of unquestionably one of Doctor Who's most popular characters.

I just saw this awful news on Facebook. She was always the definitive companion to me. I saw her a couple of years ago presenting a science-fiction themed concert in Liverpool, she didn't look her age at all. That's the Brig and Sarah Jane now within a couple of months. Terrible. frown

I'm stunned. She looked extremely fit for a 63 year old. I would have said early 40s, in fact. I thought she was going to go on forever. RIP.

Very sorry to hear that.

I never saw her on the old DR. WHO show (as my relationship to that started with the 2005 reboot), but I was familiar with her through that new DR. WHO spinoff-show for kids, THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES.

What was the cause of death, does anyone know? I assume it's some sort of cancer, maybe?

It's not been officially announced as far as I can tell, but they seem to be saying cancer on the Gallifreybase fan message boards.

Awful awful news-so very sad-she seemed to be a genuinely nice lady and had great success with The Sarah-Jane Adventures. Good bye. xx

Usually the reports of celebrity deaths cause me some sadness, but are rarely shocking because of the ages of most of those who pass on. Liz Sladen's death however greatly shocked me. My favorite of all of the Doctor's companions, a lovely lady who was way too young to die. So very sorry to hear this. frown

This was a shock to me, and I learned the news while at work, so I was probably the only person there who even knew who Sladen was.

Thirty years ago, I wrote her a fan letter and received a nice photo signed by her.

Watched her first appearance on Dr Who last night, The Time Warrior.

K-9 and Company. I could use the smile right about now.

A real shame. Way too young and apparently out of the blue.

I didn't half fancy her when I was about 13.
