Watching this tonight on Blu Ray what really strikes me is how much better some of the action is to Skyfall. And there is more if it, too.
The library shoot out, especially, is so much more exciting that the similarly-stagesd court room fire fight in Skyawn.
That said, London looks soooo much nicer in Mendes' film (aside from the scenes which are supposed to be Shanghai).
I quite liked the film, although I thought Ben Drew was terrible. Damian Lewis would have been much better choice to play George Carter. Loved the shootout in Trafagar Square.

I agree mate. Drew was hopeless and not at all convincing that he could have risen through fhe ranks at such a young age.
Did the London scenes make you yearn for a day out in the West End like those halcion days in the 80s?
Anytime I see something from home. But that as they say is another story.
As for the film, it came out on a limited release in the U.S. I believe the Blu Ray release is planned for next month. I didn't want to wait that long, so I imported the UK version.

Watched this on bluray last night.
Dear oh dear. Dear oh dear oh dear.
I don't ever remember getting the feeling from watching a film that it's been made by a bunch of mates for their own fun and satisfaction, with no regard for any future viewers. Ray Winstone didn't play a Jack Regan 40 years on - he played Ray Winstone after watching the Dirty Harry boxset. As for Ben Drew/Plan B, surely for the same money they could have engaged an actor. Damian Lewis should have a stern word with both his agent and his voice coach.
Hayley Atwell was ok except for the distasteful bonking of an old and fat senior officer, and her share of the plot was risibly predictable - yes, Jack, I'll live with you; and here, you keep hold of this ear-ring until this job's finished. I'd have put our mortgage on her not surviving the next five minutes.
I'm not usually one for complaining about casual swearing or violence, but this film went well over the top on both. People not used to watching Eastenders or West Ham would probably need to apply the subtitles. Luckily, I lived near London for a while and picked up the lingo. Every other word rhymed with "lackin"
The Inception-lite score by Lorne Balfe was one of the better things about it, but it was attached to the wrong film. I wouldn't mind hearing it again on disc, as long as it's a CD and not one with moving pictures.
The one thing they probably got right was the car chases, which were as boring as they probably are in real life. Unfortunately this aspect needed more than a bit of speeding down country lanes or through a mobile home park. Let me repeat that last bit - a mobile home park. With no occupants. Oh for a fruit cart.
And the much lauded shoot out in Trafalgar Square was so obviously done at first light that there was zero tension, the extras even looking like stunt performers instead of innocent passers-by. I know they couldn't have done it any other way, but other films manage to disguise shooting restrictions, not emphasize them.
I hope they show the original Sweeney films again soon, to get the horrible taste of disappointment out of my mouth. I'm afraid it can't stand up against Snatch or Rock'N'Rolla, let alone classic British gangster films like Get Carter and The Long Good Friday.
Get yer trahziz on - and pick a different film off the shelf to watch.

The original Sweeney films are still available on Region 2. I imported them after I saw the film. Both films for a fiver.

Saw The Sweeney film last night - possibly one of the worst films I've ever seen. And the main reason is Winstone's performance, which is an off-the-scale parody, surely?
Oddly enough, having expected a lot worse from him, I didn't think Ben Drew was really that bad, even if he was totally unbelieveable as a policeman (as indeed the whole lot were).
As regards the scores for the original Sweeney films, I agree that it would be lovely to have a release of the scores by Hatch and King, if they still exist. From memory, both films were relatively lightly scored and possibly would fit on a single CD. I'd rather that than Lorne Balfe's generic score for the remake.
I used to have the Hatch theme on a vinyl single and alas they made it more 'disco' in style, presumably for commercial appeal. The 'Shut It' compilation was a little lazy IMO (could they not get the rights to the Hatch music, or has it been lost?) and the inclusion of dialogue bleeding over into the start and finish of each piece of library music was annoying to say the least. Could they really not have left the music totally clean, and left the bloody dialogue off in the first place? I mean, Sweeney fans will know it anyway and have the dialogue on the DVDs, which is the best place to keep it.
I think Silva at one time might have been a good bet for a CD of Sweeney feature film music. Perhaps when they get over their obsession with Doctor Who....

Finally saw this on tv tonight, recorded from last nite.
I was never gonna pay for it.
Oh my lord it was awful.
Where to start ...other than to say i agree word for word with tg and simon.
It was shockingly bad, from the rip off of Heat shootout, the lack of decent dialogue, the ott false acting and everyone pretending to be tough, excessive fackings, plan B aged 16 as a sergeant, and a very young and sexy actress aged about 23 (Atwell?) falling for a fat grizzled and overweight 60 year old - most believable!! - and even lewis putting on a ridiculous cockney accent, because as the boss it was totally unecessary.
And the most grating thing for me ...was winstones creme suede shoes!!!
Only a knob would wear Black leather jacket and black trousers - with these ludicrously camp cream suede shoes!!!
You can do anything - but dont step on my cream suede shoes!!!
The whole incoherent mess was total fackin' bollocks, old son!!
Avoid at all costs. Give me Sweeney! And Sweeney 2 anyday.
