This has always been a sentimental fave of mine except I cannot think of any time where a score was produced from North's poignant music. I know there's not a lot of original score due to the inclusion of songs from the era but what music he did compose was quite beautiful, especially that string elegy. There's also a chase sequence that has some really dynamic rhythmic elements. Hope one day this surfaces, even if it's on a compilation or something. This music deserves to be listened to outside its film.

I must admit that I can't remember much of the score, only the songs (and obviously the ironic use of Louis Armstrong's "It's a Wonderful World"). But it's many years since I saw it. I think, though, that this may be more up my alley in terms of North. I've never really been that keen on his more gritty, dissonant stuff. It's definitely more tonal. Lots of 7th chords and the occasional major 9th. Full harmonies that recall that time period in music. Almost a slight jazz influence.

While looking for the Intrada press for their new cd (July 2017), I found this somewhat more interesting thread to bump. I've always been fascinated by this project - as a kid I watched any comedy that cable offered up, but had a weird fascination with this film & score. I didn't even know who North was then, just that it wasn't one of the usual suspects that did these things scoring the film, and it wasn't electronic. North's short score was classy & really added something but as an 11 year old I didn't understand fully just what. I'm thrilled to have what there is at last - nothing beats Golden Age composers work done with modern recording techniques, you know? The song cassette was an early purchase as a kid & maybe the fact no score was included perplexed me as a developing score junkie- it was so short, why not, come on A&M Records!! Newman's companion score on this disc, OPERATION DUMBO DROP, is very good too - it's always helpful when two random score pairings work out well & you aren't stuck with 1 dog out of the 2. The Phantom Goes To Saigon ! Fun stuff. -Sean
