After this thread was posted I looked back on my collection to remind myself of the
films that have not been released on DVD or blu-ray.
I watched the MGM musical The Student Prince with Ann Blyth, Edmund Purdom and
the singing voice of Mario Lanza. The video is just what you'd expect from LD.
However, the audio is magnificent, especially the choral numbers: Drink, Drink and
Gaudeamus Igitur. Let's have it released soon. Is it being held up by rights problems?
I know the film itself is corny, but what a score!
I'm sure the problem is they (whoever *they* are) thinks there's a limited market for this film and it will likely be a MOD DVD at some point.

"The Student Prince" runs periodically on Turner Classic Movies, so I assume that a Warner Archive disc will eventually appear. It's only the separate release of the music tracks that is problematic, because of Lanza's long-time contractual relationship with RCA.

There are some components of laserdiscs that will probably never see release on dvd or Blu-ray-such as isolated tracks for music and effects --
Many of the classic animation releases from Walt Disney such as SNOW WHITE, ALICE IN WONDERLAND , PETER PAN(CAV release), etc- there are more - have these isolated music tracks and they are a real pleasure to listen to alone or in conjunction with the movie.
There is another thread which list most but not all lasers that have the isolated scores - such as ELMER GANTRY, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, WOMEN IN LOVE, CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE,SAMSON AND DELILAH,etc.
BTW THE BOYFRIEND is being released on dvd next Tuesday by Warner Archive complete with Overture+Entr'acte and a featurette on the making of..

THE BOYFRIEND is being released on dvd next Tuesday by Warner Archive complete with Overture+Entr'acte and a featurette on the making of..
This is great news as I've put in two offers for the used laserdisc on ebay- and neither seller has responded yet. Woo-hoo!

Warner Archive just released a treasure trove of musicals today including this beautifully photographed version of ROSE MARIE - the first in Cinemascope according to its trailer -- remastered too-
Ask and ye shall receive. Although remastered, Warners doesn't yet have any clip up to demonstrate the quality of the remaster, as it does for some other titles released today. The laserdisc was not all it was cracked up to be. Douglas Pratt, in The LaserDisc Newsletter, described its video/audio/supplement qualities thusly:
"In general, the colors on the disc come and go. Most of the time the image looks quite nice, but once in a while it will appear too greenish or grainy. The sound is listed as stereo, but it is actually monaural. Although promoted on the jacket cover, the film's theatrical trailer has also been left off the disc."
Hopefully, the remaster has solved the audio/video quality issues. The trailer doesn't seem to have made it onto the DVD either. Instead, Warners says that there is a musical number which was deleted from the film (but which appears on the soundtrack LP).

I watched the laserdisc last night and it does have the trailer at the end of the movie --in full frame --toting the" first musical in Cinemascope" so Pratt was wrong --- for a 20 year old disc , it looks pretty good in wide screen but when there is another sale at Warner Archives , I'll buy the dvd, as well as the other ones mentioned.
A great cover - this is the style that Twilight Time should follow --

Best laserdisc ever? The Criterion Collection version of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. All CAV, with tons of extras. Even a paper insert explaining why one SFX shot from the Special Edition was included in the cut of the original release version. Superb.
