You post covers by Sammy and leave out most the obvious and best?! Seems I have to correct that grave error:
And to keep in tune with your theme of missing the old times:
And here's one that really made deep impression on me over 25 years ago.
What can you say but "Robbie Williams, shut your face, piss off and leave siging to the professionals".
It htink a part of the atraction of Sammy is that his personal life was such a hard knock story. Sure he was not the only one but it amazes me that it didn't break him. Sinatra loved the guy, and who can blame him. A tough little bugger with the moves and the voice.
I love the Bang Bang number from Robin & The 7 Hoods. I had the album but the songs never sounded as good as they did in the film. I believe the album was recorded after the film was completed, I wonder if Warner still have the film tracks?
Oops, you meant that it was awesome that H50 had lyrics.
So I ran off at the mouth for all the wrong reasons (a circumstance that, honestly, is no barrier to me generally if you look at my posts around here )
He gave his musical director Morton Stevens his big break when he asked him to score an episode of "General Electric Theater", starting Stevens' film music career. It's too bad, though that Sammy never appeared in an episode of "Hawaii Five O" (of which of course the main title and some episodes were scored by him). He was the last member of the singing Rat Pack to have a #1 single ("The Candy Man").
Saw him at Harrah's Tahoe with the Mike Curb Congregation singing "The Candy Man" in 1972 when I was 13. Then saw him in Long Beach doing a Christmas Concert around 1986 and met him on the set of TAP when I was a tap dancing extra in 1988. Savion Glover who was really young and was in the movie was a little dick and would not take a photo of me and Sammy. The kid had an attitude and a polaroid camera and his mother even said "Savion take a photo of this nice person with Mr. Davis Jr. so he can have a nice memory" and Savion refused. Sammy was in the next room but would have graciously posed for a photo. So I still hate Savion Glover to this day and have that memory of him.
Here's a 13 year old Zoob outside Harrah's Tahoe in 1972 posing with the marquee that reads: THE SAMMY DAVIS JR. SHOW - THE MIKE CURB CONGREGATION. George Rhodes conducting. Louis Prima and Jim Nabors were also there or coming soon. It's a beautiful photo and memory.
