The La-La Land TOS set inspired me to slowly work my way through the original series in production order. I've been blogging each episode as I go, I'm only part way through season 2, having just finished The Apple a week ago.

If anyone is interested, you can find them here:

It's an entertaining blog. Thanks for posting.

Many great comments on many of my favourites.

Arena has to be my top pick. High stakes, and a real test of Humanity. Court Martial is up there - guess I`m a courtroom epic kook. Finnigan`s beating in Shore Leave warrants mention of course (excellent actor, and Shatner played off him extremely well... great fight). The Doomsday Machine is definitely one of the finest sci-fi episodes - and plausibly sobering scenarios. Balance Of Terror, Amok Time (one of the best bits of scoring in early sci-fi, too).

This Side Of Paradise strikes me for several reasons. An insidious fake cult-like induced bliss, the peril of being alone against impossible threat, desperation, tragic regret.

When you encounter stories that good, you enjoy watching them every time. Morally formative stuff too.

Season Three
1st : THE MARK OF GIDEON -- S03E16
2nd : THE THOLIAN WEB -- S03E09
3rd : THE EMPATH -- S03E12
Disqualified : PLATO'S STEPCHILDREN -- S03E10 eek eek eek eek

I like to read Anabel's input because her selections are very unlike a typical Trekkie.

Even though PLATO'S STEPCHILDREN is not a top 10 with me, I still like it a lot.
I think PLATO'S STEPCHILDREN is an interesting critique of democracy.
Why does Anabel dislike it so much?

THE MARK OF GIDEON is usually one the least liked episodes because of its lapses in logic.
How did the Gideons manage their over-populated crowds to make space for a replica of the Enterprise?
Why does Anabel love this one?

I'm curious, also, why Ms. Boyer doesn't care for Robert Bloch's Jack-The-Ripper script for WOLF IN THE FOLD?

This summer I've watched the complete three seasons at one episode a day and this has quick turned into a fun after-lunch ritual brightened up with a nice cup of coffee + 2 squares of chocolate.

Two squares of chocolate a day for 79 days? That will keep the arteries open. I have a hard time resisting chocolate, myself. It beckons every time I step into a store. Like, which brand of chocolate? did you have the Swiss kind or the silky French kind? or is it just Hershey's?

Short answer : because it's a piece of crap.
Long answer : because it features some of the most embarrassing scenes i've ever seen on
a TV screen -- Kirk as a horse, Spock's flamenco.
And about the so-called "most daring" TV's first-ever interracial kiss : what a fraude! The kiss is a forced kiss : both Uhura and Kirk are reluctant about it. So that kiss actually says the exact opposite of what it's supposed to "stand for".

  • THE MARK OF GIDEON is usually one the least liked episodes because of its lapses in logic

Oh my god...ToneRow is actually Spock! big grin

  • How did the Gideons manage their over-populated crowds to make space for a replica of the Enterprise?

I won't answer that question because i find it irrelevant on a show like STAR TREK : i could find dozen of lapses in logic in each episode.

  • Why does Anabel love this one?

I love the script and the episode is blended with mystery : Kirk -- and we too -- thinking he has not left the Enterprise ; Kirk walking through an empty Enterprise wondering what's going on ; the first appearence of the girl ; the gentle romance ; the powerful impact of the many faces glancing through the windows. And I also like the the quite unexpected line rised by Kirk about contraception.

  • I'm curious, also, why Ms. Boyer doesn't care for Robert Bloch's Jack-The-Ripper script for WOLF IN THE FOLD?

I'm never impressed by "big names". Robert Bloch is a "big name", yet i've found the episodes he has penned very disappointing. And i think WOLF IN THE FOLD is an even ludicrous one. On the opposite, a non-professional writer as Jean Lisette Aroeste has written two very exciting and inventive stories. Pity she didn't write a few more.

    Satisfied, Mr. Spock? wink

Do not resist : it's pointless. Just take the control of it. wink
No favorite brand but always 85% cacao chocolate bars at least -- usually Lindt:

There are differing criteria re what's 'good' in ST.

I like the allegorical nature of the thing, as a voyage into the unconscious, where 'none have gone before', so the pieces like 'Who Mourns for Adonis?' have the most satisfying significance. Or 'Enemy Within' etc..

But there are episodes that are just dramatically well presented like 'Amok Time' or the Corbomite thing.

My LEAST favourites were 'The Omega Glory' and the Apollo mission thing, both of which didn't convince. I recall not being overawed by the Tribbles material but that was then.

Ah - the Parmen-forced situations are meant to be embarrassing.

In my experience, some people who hold positions of authority (e.g. the boss at work, the drill sergeant, etc.) are inclined to deliberately humiliate their subordinates.

Yeah, there are some very provocative ideas in THE MARK OF GIDEON; I have wondered how much of this script was the input of comedic actor Stanley Adams?

Yes, I agree. Aroeste wrote my fave "Is There In Truth No Beauty?"

    Satisfied, Mr. Spock? wink

No. I would like Anabel Boyer to write a book on STAR TREK. I think it would be a more interesting read than the books by Allan Asherman. smile

I'm very glad Anabel did not put forth standard-issue Trekkie favorites such as "The City On The Edge Of Forever" or "The Trouble With Tribbles" or "Shore Leave". These much-mentioned segments frequently over-shadow the lesser-talked-about shows (which may possess a lot more philosophical speculations).

I kinda sorta like / don't mind the Fourth season. Sample eps:

and let's not forget the Star Trek movie written by David Gerrold:

I'm not familiar with the work of this gentleman but your suggestion sounds pretty much like a damning with faint praise, don't you agree? wink
Actually i'd be interested in browsing THESE ARE THE VOYAGES by Marc Cushman but Volume 3 has not been published yet -- it says "Fall 2014", though. But right now, my major concern is to convince myself that i can live without the gorgeous La-La-Land Box Set, and to tell the truth i'm a pathetic "persuader"! I wish i had known how much i was going to enjoy these scores : i would have taken advantage of some of the nice past sales from La-La-Land.

Just got a message from Employee2 through my communicator saying the Enterprise is on her way to the shores of France. And i hope the Non-Interference Directive won't apply in this case and i'll get my box set eventually! smile
