Yeah, it was good to see it on the big screen in NFT1, Kev. Those 70s/80s De Palma films are just masterful. I've missed a lot of his later work so will stream 'Passion' and Femme Fatale at the weekend.

When I think of horror-scores or the combo viewing Carrie it ranks highly, that moodiness of materials are just so creative just as much with the lighter tones that I hear too just listen too that opening theme. I never tire listening too Carrie its so slick & full-bodied, I think its one of Donaggio's finest.

I love the music in CARRIE and BLOW OUT. Like KeV I found the ending of BLOW OUT gut wrenching, and the music near the final ending is stunning. Don't watch the youtube below if you don't want to see who dies.

I found it strange and yet fitting that Donaggio used such a lovely piece of music when Travolta tries to save the woman's life. That piece starts at 1:33 and ends 2:20.

I too loved Blow Out when it came out. That ending... !
For years I treasured that weird Japanese LP that was released only to find out much later it was a re-recording. As I’d only seen the film once I never really realised the difference and it was a really good re recording. Having that as my go to listen for so long still makes it hard to listen to the real version these days. Both have their merits and I usually hate re-recordings.
Dressed To Kill is still the ultimate Pino for me though. Seldom have I heard bits of music that swept me along like the ‘museum’ piece. He’s written so many great scores but I also want to give a shout out for The Howling which I think often seems to get a bit overlooked.

Yes, that BLOW OUT Japanese LP was pretty decent as far as cover versions go.
I really liked it too, but being more familiar with the film/score through countless viewings on video, I always longed for the real deal.
The Prometheus CD was a godsend, when it finally arrived (Did we get a tease a few years before, with that DePalma/Donaggio compilation CD that included some tracks from it? Can't remember which came first).
His output from his early/mid 70s scores (DON'T LOOK NOW, CARRIE) through to his 80s stuff is incredible.
Not just DRESSED TO KILL and THE HOWLING as you mention, but mighty fine stuff like HOME MOVIES, TOURIST TRAP, ZELLY & ME, HERCULES, BODY DOUBLE.
And I still hope for a release of TEX and KANSAS, two great Americana scores he wrote.
The Man was ON FIRE!!!

My favorite Pino Donaggio scores? Let's see what I pick if I limit myself to five

BODY DOUBLE
No doubt, I love the movie and the music.

ZELLY AND ME
Never saw the movie, but the music is beautiful. Very harmonic and pleasant like a warm end-summer evening.

DON'T LOOK KNOW
The first film score by Donaggio, and also my first encounter with him. The childlike piano theme is one of Donaggio's most haunting creations.

HERCULES
Donaggio goes big orchestral and pompous... lot's of fun music for monsters that look like they came from a metal construction kit.

DRESSED TO KILL / BLOW OUT
Can't decide between these two... but it gives me a reason to re-listen to them soon....
Tonight, it's BLOW OUT...
