I.... I just heard this score today.

I thought it was dreck.

And it was up against How to Train Your Dragon.

WHY?

What a major f***ing disappointment.

Then again, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the Academy would pull off this stunt.

And I thought Roger Deakins losing for the ninth time would be the biggest crotch punch of the night.

Composers vote on this category, right?

What the F**K happened?!

I have no qualms with THE SOCIAL NETWORK winning Best Score. I'll be listening to it all day at work tomorrow.

This category is always a disappointment. Most members of the Academy don't know a thing about music or scoring for motion pictures. No surprise this year.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross

Well well,
Who woulda thunk that Nine Inch Nails would ever win an Oscar.
It is cool that he won, regardless.

(Poor Roger, yes... What does he have to do to get it?) No, everybody votes for everybody - on this and every other category. And this year the thing sucks... IT SUCKS...

I liked hearing William Ross conduct some MEMORABLE Oscar scores before the award. He played E.T., Star Wars, Lawrence Of Arabia, and Tonight from West Side Story. They are all memorable and instantly recognizable. ......and then a score with about 4 notes won. Yeah, awesome movie, and the score fit the movie, but in terms of music, it didn't hold a candle to How To Train Your Dragon or the other scores Ross played. Very disappointed.

If you are unhappy about this, just ask yourself a simple question: How many other scores that did NOT win do you enjoy listening to?

Does the award really matter in ones ability to enjoy music?

Of all the nominees, it was the score that EASILY had the biggest positive impact on the actual film. King's Speech was very nice wallpaper that had classical pieces for its two most climactic scenes, 127 Hours was propulsive and unique but not memorable. How to Train Your Dragon was the best music, but it was for a movie that really hasn't gotten much play and wasn't as upfront a score as Social Network. Inception was as up front, but I think was actually too overbearing, and the non-atmospheric music (which voters probably wouldn't notice anyway) was pretty standard Zimmer.

Social Network is not the most complicated music, but I can't for the life of me understand the vitriol people have for it. It works like absolute gangbusters in the film, and is essential in creating the soundscape that helps separate the film from a typical angsty teen film, or a typical biopic, or a typical anything, really.
