This appears to be a straight re-release of the original 2cd set, the only differences I can see are;

a) Original Artwork from the LP release.

b) It's in a JEWEL CASE.

It might be worth buying this, just to replace the original Digipak, mine fell apart during our last move.

Hi Chris
When the digi came out I was sceptical that the double CD would offer much more of a listening experience to what we already had - but what wonderful variation! I think I even slightly prefer disc 2! It gets a regular play and it I was pleasantly surprised just how good it was, it doesnt wane or drop below brilliant for a minute.

Hi Bill,

Agree with you there, I reckon that Giu' La Testa is one of (if not THE) best expanded albums available. My only grouse with the original release was the awful Digipak and the fact that the last two tracks on disc two were mono, but that's a minor complaint.

I almost bought the Japanese release of this album (it was in a Jewel Case) but the price put me off, I think I may splash out on this, it is only about half the price of the Japanese edition, and I could do with some decent packaging for this awesome music.

I think that the second disc is the best listen, although the whole score sounds magnificent, I wish (though it's not going to happen) that we could have The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in this sound quality.

Did I miss something? Has someone re-issued Giu La Testa?

I think a further expanded The Good the Bad and The Ugly - or a second CD, is unlikely, Chris. The project was a massive one for Ehresmann and Winkler and the engineers who worked on it, cleaned it up and got it past Morricone. There was lots of music but he kept saying no. He doesnt like short tracks and often refuses to pass stuff like that, so they glued some together to get it past him and managed to do so. There was more versions of the aa-ee-aa-ee-aa - different length versions - but Morricone wouldnt sanction one after the other, like they did with, say, the Patton trumpets recently. You will notice some aa-ee-aa-ee-aas are tagged on the end of the tracks etc - I think they did a fantastic job with the cleaning up and presentation as it stands, considering the abysmal LP version and what we started with. Is there a worse mis-representation of a great score than the original GBU LP selection?

Yes I noted that it had gone OOP a few weeks ago, & prices on Amazon Marketplace had really shot up, so it's good that it's being reissued. An expanded soundtrack this good should always be in print. I can't see a date yet, I first noticed it last week on Chris' Soundtrack Corner, now I see it's also on SAE.

In a word..........NO.

There were 11 tracks on the LP, two of which weren't even the film versions, the sound wasn't exactly impressive, the best sounding GBU tracks appeared later on the RCA I Western compilation, why they sounded so much better than the LP versions I don't know.

Different masters?

I've just bought the 2009 re issue for £9.00, I think that this version sounds better than the 2001 issue, and it hasn't got a rainbow coloured playing surface, mine always looked like someone had poured a hot drink over the disc and it recently started skipping, hence the update.

I've always liked the cover art on the new release, it's the same as the cover on the original LP and the Japanese 2cd set.

My previous GBU disc, the playing side was always "misty" almost like it had been in a steamy room and had just got misted up. But whatever it was, it never came off and I suspect it impaired the sound, because my new disc sounds much better than the old one did.

Quick update;

This is a straight re-issue, the booklet and the discs are the same as the previous digi pak release.

The rear cover is the same as the rear digi pak cover, and the tray liner is a poster from Giu' La Testa.

The only difference is the front cover, which is the same as the original LP release.

There's nothing new here, not even the extra track that appeared on the Japanese 2cd release.

But........it looks nice.......and my digi pak had disintegrated...so I bought it anyway. smile

It's now in the Intrada catalogue too.

Believe it or not, with the present dollar/euro exchange rate it costs me less to order this 2CD edition overseas than to buy it here in Italy.

You guys have really made me glad I come on here. First I managed to get The Big Gundown release from Japan, which I'm dying to listen to but can't until at least my birthday this coming Saturday!, so thanks for the info regarding that.

Now you've made me enthusiastic about this new release, after I've already had the selection on the Western Quintet from some years ago.

Agree totally what's been said about GBU. The original album made everything apart from the opening titles, the Desert track, and the last two sound dull. But put in the right order, with all the reprises of the theme and it's cries, the whole thing comes alive, with those 'dull' tracks having the right mood change within the track list. Total improvement. And I love what they did with extending The Trio with the mono film version of the second part, giving us a third. The chime break allows this without any problem of the track not flowing. Genius!

As we soundtrack fans have found with many releases over the last few years, less is not necessarily more.

I can't find this jewel case version, which superseded the digipack, anywhere at SAE.

All previous replies in this thread were 2011, so I suspect it's now out of print. Did you try Amazon?

Weirdly i have had this Duck you sucker digi foldout Cd in my car for the last two weeks! Disc 2 hasnt come out the player.
So i have been Wut wutting and shon shon shonning all over town!!
My favourite music bit - among many fave bits - is the track where the rich stagecoach passengers have been stripped and are made to shuffle naked and then the technician - presumably Winkler - has glued the brilliant organ burst followed by the Cantori moderni choral chanting when juan dreams of the mesa verde bank on the end. Love it.

I remember TG saying how much he loved disc 2 and clearly above chris thinks the same.
A fab Ennio score and what expanded releases are really all about.
