Though Michel Legrand is not one of my favorite composers... I loved his lush score to THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT. I still have the original soundtrack lp from the 70's. Has this been released on cd? It really is a terrific score.

Speaking of Sidney Sheldon adaptations... I know that Ennio Morricone's BLOODLINE was a Varese Club cd years ago... Has that been released since? Would love to get that one as well.

No and No.

Must admit I liked this one too - great tune! And very romantic.

Incidentally the main theme was also released as a vocal by Tommy Leonetti on 20th Century Records (Lyrics by Carol Connors).

"Lush" is egg-zactly the right word to describe it.

Too bad any cd release will never re-create the 288 square-inch awesomeness of the black-and-white gatefold!

As I mentioned on a prior thread about this score, the LP was a re-recording with the London Symphony Orchestra and sounds immensely better than the film version.

It might be great if both versions could be put on CD for comparison. Still haven't a clue why the LP, at the very least, hasn't made it to CD yet.

Legrand is one of my ten favorite composers and this is one of his greatest scores. I wasn't aware that the LP was a re-recording. James, do you remember if there's a substantial amount of additional score in the film than the cues contained on the album?

No. I think the LP represented the score pretty accurately.

This is also one of my favorite not released on cd scores! Noelle's Theme (in what to my ears sounds like one of the versions from the original album) is on Le Cinéma de Michel Legrand. It would be wonderful to have all of the score some day! And, yes, the original gatefold cover was amazing!

Best,
Mark

Lush indeed....this one's filed in my romantic section. As I've explained before, I separate my scores by genre (and year of release)...action, art, animation, comedy etc. In the romantic section, Legrand just happens to have four films running back to back: Summer of 42, Breezy, Ode to Billy Joe and The Other Side of Midnight...

Broke out my LP of this after posting this thread. Such a beautiful score. Yup, lush was the correct word for it. I hope someone does put this out one day on cd.

Afterwards I listened to his score for WUTHERING HEIGHTS... such an under-rated work. Love it...

That Tommy Leonetti vocal version of The Other Side of Midnight was called "Faded Roses" and released on a vinyl '45. There's a promotional copy of it available for $5 on ebay.

Doug Fake truly picked the right word when he called this LP presentation "sumptuous".

I don't know any other soundtrack that has quite the gorgeous reverb/echo/ambience/whatever-they-call-it in the recording. It sparkles and shimmers and is gorgeous.

Doubt me? Listen to the sample called "Demeris' Party":

And it's 25% off now!

It is a gorgeous score, and a gorgeous-sounding CD. I wish Michel Legrand was still scoring contemporary Hollywood films.

Enjoying this one this week. It's like lounging in velvet, it's so lush.... smile
