I was listening to some Barry last night. How many of us became film music fans because of Barry's scores? Who could watch a Bond film and not notice the unforgettable themes? He was awesome and will be missed.

He is a very big reason became film music fan. Some of my earliest were Barry.

I'm from New York, so it would be a stretch to be in London at your Pub farewell. Wish I could. I've been trying to figure out why John Barry's death hit me so hard. I've been listening to his music since the "Midnight Cowboy" days. His scores were such that I just didn't tire of them--a few months away and they'd sound as fresh as ever. A simple sound, yes, but so rich in emotion. As someone said earlier--melancholy but optimistic. Add me to those who looked at all the film releases, hoping to find his name there. That quest is over. I'll be raising a glass to him stateside.

Four years ago today. What will you play by way of remembrance?

Enigma.

Underrated film and score.

4 years...damn. How we miss him.

I have 'Peggy Sue Got Married', 'The Betsy', 'Swept From The Sea' and 'Across The Sea Of Time' sitting by my CD player, so I'll give them a spin. Love 'em all.

I was also listening to some of 'The Lion In Winter' on my way into work earlier.

Thanks, Stephen, for the reminder. I admit to being not the best with such dates (even family members ...)

And so it's pure coincidence that ...

... I'm presently listening to the first half of the disc The Early Years (just finished) ... I split the CD into two when I ripped it to my NAS.

... and, this morning, whilst on random play, I noted three JB cues in the approx. 50mins of play - a significant proportion! ... from Starcrash, King Rat and Mike's Murder

I think I shall choose a score later in the day. I haven't played Monte Walsh or Swept from the Sea for a long time so perhaps one of those ...

A near-lifetime of collecting his works ... a distinct failure to find anything therein which I don't enjoy. Very happy memories.

Mitch

excellent choice.

Cry The Beloved Country for me tonight, a strong performance by James Earl Jones.

It's that date again today where we remember one of the all-time greats who departed this mortal plain 12 years ago today.

What will you play?

Cheers

I will play Midnight Cowboy--first the original album and then the JB extras and film cues.

More and more the original album is becoming my favorite Barry soundtrack.

An atypical album for the master of theme and variations, there are five tracks, each one different and each one a gem.

Put me down for an album I've created titled Concert Suites being the suites from Starcrash, Indecent Proposal and High Road to China as taken from those scores' CD releases.

I’ve driven halfway across England today on business and alternated between Talk Sport and Classic FM, depending on the signal. The latter played The Beyondness of Things, without actually mentioning the anniversary, which all things considered was a suitable tribute.

I actually think MIDNIGHT COWBOY is John Barry's most perfect creation.

Not necessarily his ‘best’ music, but the most perfect expression of his unique facility and taste in marrying music with film.

An eminently study-worthy example of the highest art in desigining and applying music to film.

Cheers

Me Thinks…

Across The Sea Of Time …Is Truly Brilliant. It is played several times a week.

Never Have I Felt So Free ..Majestic…Open Wide. Pure Barry.

And The Original Cue meant for Barbra Streisand, The Prince of Tides.. only if she hadn’t been so…Barbra! Flight Over New York!

Coney Island…Damn Beautiful.

And I am truly amazed by the Clarity and Great Sounds of the New Expanded Chaplin!

The new cues are truly wonderful. Chaplin Goes to The U.S. WOW!

I wish whomever has control..of John Barry, John Williams, and Jerry Goldsmith’s unreleased full film soundtracks…please release them…WE ALL ain’t getting younger…

I still want ..Out of Africa, A View to a Kill, Moonraker Born Free, The Specialist, Peggy Sue Got Married, Raise The Titanic, All The Rejected Music from Playing By Heart.

I only have the audiocassette and every player is out of commission so the mind's ear will have to suffice = "We Have All the Time In the World," the Moviola version.

Intrada's remaster of The Black Hole from "Durant Is Dead" through "Into the Hole", and "Is He The One? (alternate excerpt)" from Somewhere in Time.

For some reason, The Knack was playing in my head today, and I totally forgot about this anniversary until I read this thread.

But instead of playing one specific score, I'm playing "Eternal Echoes". And the track "Returning Home" seems entirely appropriate for a remembrance of John Barry's amazing career and life.
