It is a return to form from Doyle. Way better than Thor.

Fantastic effort from Doyle - embodies all the qualities of his best scores. I'm liking THOR as well, but DROITE is a cut above even for Doyle.

That shouldn't be too surprising, though. As successful and well-known as his collaborations with Kenneth Branagh have been, his scores for Régis Wargnier have been his masterpieces: Indochine, Une Femme Française, Pars Vite et Reviens Tard, and Est-Ouest.

Now, can we please, please get a soundtrack for Man To Man?

Mikael's Movie Score Media label is supposed to be releasing Man 2 Man any time soon, as confirmed by Maggie Rodford in November 2009.

Never heard about the film. Did it get a U.S. release? The main title music I just played sounds terrific. Definitely looking forward to a CD release of this score.

Wargnier's last few films have not been released in the US. I tracked down MAN TO MAN and PARS VITE ET REVIENS TARD on import DVDs to check them out and can safely say the US didn't miss anything - they're dreadful, nothing like his amazing EST/OUEST.

Just got this.

It's a lovely score. Yes, it has a Philipp Glass vibe like a LOT of stuff these days, but it's refreshing from Doyle's pen (he's always had certain minimalist tendencies here and there). Certainly more rewarding than a lot of other stuff he's done recently, including the AMERICA symphony thingie.

CINDERELLA really brought Doyle back into focus for me, it's just a terrific score. As is LA LINGE DROITE, which I hadn't really noticed a few years back. It's an extremely rewarding listen, inviting repeat performances again and again. Like with EST-OUST, piano is important, though even more so. It's just a pleasure to hear all the instrumental lines playing and interacting. Exciting, beautiful music. And thematic! As others have mentioned, Doyle tips his cap to Philip Glass, but without sounding anything like him. It seems more a Patrick Doyle score with minimalist characteristics, less a clone of, well, anything. Scores like this, GOSFORD PARK and SLEUTH are the kind of modern approaches I think Doyle is best at doing, instead of THOR, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and JACK RYAN. Those latter efforts have moments, but primarily when Doyle's own inimitable voice is present.

Anyway, a great score.

slightly off topic, but still about Patrick Doyle....finally, last week I was able to buy for a very decent price the stupidly out of print Needful Things, that usually fetches horrendous ransoms on the used market.
It's just a great score, of even higher quality than I remembered.
First of all, even I hadn't heard the score since I saw the movie, the main theme leapt to me like it was yesterday .. just wonderful how it perfectly captures Leland Gaunt's mix of evil and wit.
But the "quieter" pieces were the biggest surprise..such sophisticated writing and orchestration (the latter not his, admittedly), such tension, such menace...
Loved every minute.
Such a pity that somehow after his golden 90's Doyle declined somewhat...I guess we have to thank France, because his best later scores are all for the Wargnier movies... La Ligne Droite is top-notch and Pars Vite et reviens Tard is a favorite of mine.
I just hope that Cinderella marks his "rebirth"
