I love both, but I think I love HOME ALONE 2 more. Maybe due to the recording quality the performance seems a little bit better on Home Alone 1 than on Home Alone 2, more balanced, more precise. Compare for example the fast Tschaikovsky-like music in both scores, the rapid passages in the Celli and the cymbal crashes, I think I like that in the first score better. Also the bass-clarinet appearing with the celesta-theme, I think that is better performed and mixed in the first. As far as the cues for itself are concerned, I like both scores very much. For me it would have to be HOME ALONE 2 (even though I know it couldn't exist without the first one) because it reprised some of the best music from the original and added a couple additional themes (LOVE the Duncan Toy Store music). And, as mentioned by TM above, the Arrival In New York cue is a fantastic variation on the Somewhere In My Memory theme, being both Christmassy AND metropolitan - it amazes me how John Williams was able to capture Christmas in a big city with that piece of music. Although, I do have a renewed appreciation for the original thanks to La La Land's expanded version. Great observation! I hadn't noticed this either, but it makes sense in such a nice and fitting way - linking Marley's sinister theme to the wonderful Christmas carol. Although I will say that the "Merry Christmas" song from 2 is wonderful and it should be boosted up there with Jingle Bells and White Christmas and all the other famous holiday tunes. Too bad it was replaced with a Christmas pop song in the movie. I tried tracking in the Williams piece years ago and it matches up very well and is a good case study in why directors should just trust their composers (or at least the good ones). The song that is used is nice enough but it feels like we’re taking time out from the movie to watch a Home Alone music video. Williams piece feels like the story is being advanced. Our attention is focused on how Kevin is reacting and we feel some of his awe and excitement of being introduced to New York at Christmas. I had to watch it with the movie to fully appreciate what a difference it makes, not that there isn’t a lot to appreciate on its own as well. With regard to the thread title, that’s a tough call. If I could only have one I’d have Home Alone 2 because you get a lot of the first score plus a lot of great new material. I don't have the disc yet but I can think of maybe a few minutes of previously unreleased music from Home Alone that is on the expanded Home Alone 2 disc and its of the slapstick variety. So most of the new music on this CD has never been available. I never felt the unreleased music from Home Alone was screaming for an expanded release but now that I know there is apparently a long Williams arranged Christmas Medley and a Williams arranged alternate finale with O Holy Night, that adds to its interest for me considerably. Add into that the improved sound quality and the purchase is more than worth it for me. I'll be happy to have the unreleased music in Home Alone as well but as an album presentation, the original release did a very good job. The new songs, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas and Christmas Star are delightful, the latter being woefully underrated. As much as I love both scores, I never cared how either were presented on the CD's. It took some major reorganization of track order and omitting some cues in order to achieve a listening experience I was pleased with.    Posted:   Dec 9, 2010 - 12:02 PM     By:   MRAUDIO   (Member) I love everything about Home Alone - I picked up the original Fox CD back in 1990 and then the Fox CD of HA2 back in 1992 - when I saw that Varese deluxe edition, I had to have that. Now, I have the LLL CD - as far as what I like better - I LOVE it all! Great music all around by Mr. Williams, who really captures the warmth and spirit of the Christmas holiday. I've always wondered what Bruce Broughton would have come up with for HA - I just love his MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET score - I picked up the Intrada CD as soon as it was released.
