The music from "Of Mice And Men" et. al was released in a "download only" format many months ago, with a promise that a physical CD would be available.

Has anyone heard anything about how or when (or if) this is to occur?

James

Well it was SUPPOSED to come out this year, but it's not on Naxos's site for this month or next :-(

Sigh.

I remember some sort of issue thing, and if you notice it's NOT up for DL any more. I really really (REALLY) hope it gets settled soon.

I don't know anything specific about this particular release, but I've been told that, unlike Copland himself, his estate can be extremely difficult to deal with. Second only, I hear, to the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization.

Does that mean I have to return the files I downloaded when I bought this when it was (briefly) released as a download purchase?

All I know is I'm glad I downloaded this when I first heard about it!

I think I'm going to email Naxos about this. It was supposed to come out by the end of last year, IIRC, and still nothing.

Well, the response I got back was disappointing:

"I checked on this disc for you and it looks as right now it is on hold. We are not exactly sure with the reasons nor do we know at this time if it will/when it will be released. I believe it may be some sort of copyright issue. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns."

At least it's not a flat-out "never", but still, how frustrating. Nothing to to do now but continue to be patient. Sigh...

Varese should reissue that RED PONY album to tide us over!

The next time my friend download it as soon as it is available and then pray for a physical release. I have made mistakes myself in the past and missed out on stuff I now want, but not on this particular item. I downloaded it.

Well it's nearly the end of 2011 and it looks as if the Naxos Our Town/Of Mice and Men CD may never see the light of day. I don't even know if I am allowed to ask this on here but could anyone of you who have downloaded the music help me out and burn me a copies of these scores? I know I have a bit of a cheek asking but I see no other way of aquiring this music.
I know it would be a bit of a drag as both scores would have to be burned onto two seprate CDRs as well as the fact that I live in Glasgow which might bump up the postage cost, however I would totally reimburse anyone who is willing to help me out with this enormous favour. I have been listening to Copland's music since I was a teenager. Just the past two days I have been listening to his early Piano Concerto. Does anyone know this piece? It is truly excellent and I love the fact that it is in two movements! I also love his Organ Symphony, the early ballet "Grohg" (whoich is astonishing as a first orchestral composition), Music for the Theatre and Piano Sonata as well all the other usual works that concertgoes love. btw i have a nice version of Copland's Vilon Sonata orchestrated as a Violin Concerto as well as a version of th Lincoln Portait without narration if anyone wants copies? Cheers Ray

http://filmscoreclicktrack.com/2010/01/cd-review-of-mice-and-men-our-town/ -- the last comment at the very bottom states that this was made without authorization from the Copland estate (so it's kinda a bootleg). True or not, dunno.

You can actually still buy it, though, here: http://www.theclassicalshop.net/Details.aspx?CatalogueNumber=ZH%200124
Not too expensive either. But given the above comment I wouldn't (note that theclassicalshop is COMPLETELY above board, it's owned by the Chandos label)

This is one of the best recordings of Copland's film music in fact it is superb. I just fail to understand why it was only available thru download? I want the CD, Naxos- HELLO!!!

Still waiting for this. I can't believe someone went through the effort of financing a new recording, but can't release it. So weird.

Well it's available as a lossless digital download and you get the artwork so it's just as good as a CD. Naxos is most likely not going to go through the expenses pressing physical copies.

To repeat what I said in the other thread....

It likely won't happen, unofrtunetly. In fact, it's surprising that The Classical Shop still has it up -- check out the bottom post here http://www.filmscoreclicktrack.com/2010/01/cd-review-of-mice-and-men-our-town/ -- "I have been informed by reliable sources in the music publishing business that the Naxos Recording has been delayed because of litigation from the Copland Estate and the music publishers. The producer, Mr Leneker, proceeded without securing the proper authorisations."

Now it COULD be a lie/troll/misinfo, but considering it was supposed to be out forever ago and the fact that said producer used to post here and seems to have disappeared, I wouldn't hold my breath.

(to add to that comment, Naxos's own DL site, Classicsonline, has NOT had the DL for quite a while now, which further adds to the likelyhood of the above)

I went looking for it on the Naxos site and couldn't find it either. Looks like I better get it from the British site before it disappears completely.
