So yesterday I got my replacement copy of Speed 2: Cruise Control from LLL. I wasn't even aware that there was mastering glitches on that CD until about a month ago, when someone alerted me to the fault. (granted, this is one of my grails - but when I ordered and receive mine originally I was preparing to leave on July holidays, and didn't get to it since then...)

I'd like to know about any and all soundtracks that are defective - but only the ones that have had replacement discs issued.

I'm aware of a few already - East of Eden, Tale of Despereaux, SpaceCamp, Wind / Whale for the Killing... and to me it seems like quality control on CD manufacturing is WAY down this year than it was last year, due to all of the reported problems coming up. So I'm definitely curious as to whether or not I missed the replacements on some of the titles that I own.

I'll see if I can try and compile a master listing based on responses to this thread - and I'll edit this post as such.

Master Listing

Arabian Nights (Richard Harvey) - Varese Sarabande
East of Eden (Lee Holdridge) - Intrada
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (Maurice Jarre) - Tadlow
Santa Claus: The Movie (Henry Mancini) - Singular Soundtrack / Quartet
SpaceCamp (John Williams) - Intrada
Spartacus (Alex North) - Varese Sarabande CD Club - Disc #5 Only
Speed 2: Cruise Control (Mark Mancina) - La-La Land
The Man Who Would Be King (Maurice Jarre) - Kritzerland
The Tale of Despereaux (William Ross) - Intrada
Wind / A Whale for the Killing (Basil Poledouris) - BSX

Well, we had a pressing plant problem (a stamper went bad during the run) with The Man Who Would Be King - replacements were issued within days - however, the problem only affected about half the run, it seems.

Thank you for that. smile I also recall an issue with the disc art on Legend of the Lost - the plant stamped on the cover for your planned (unfortunately now canned) release of Last Man on Earth - did anyone receive those defects before the batch was repressed?

So uh....why isn't Speed 2 on that list?

Hehe, I must be fast asleep at the wheel today. Slipped from my mind!

We caught the problem with the wrong art before discs were dispatched and included the corrected discs with all orders - as did all the online dealers - that one we were actually ahead of the game. But, to be clear, the pressing itself was fine.

The only other thing in recent history I know of would be Santa Claus The Movie, from Singular Soundtrack (now merged with Quartet) This was not so much a manufacturing defect as an attempt to minimize tape hiss by methods that didn't take well with collectors, and so an unaltered pressing was made to replace the original pressing.

Please add disc #1 of the Love Theme and Variations set from Spartacus -- disc number 5 in the overall set -- to your list; replacement discs were issued.

There's got to be a ton of others yet, no?

Vide The Tale of Despereaux (William Ross) - Intrada
I must missed that, what was the error?

Added Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. I had forgotten about that one.

Sidious - it had something to do with the end of track 4, if my memory serves me right.

Edit: Arabian Nights also.

Arabian Nights - Richard Harvey had a mastering error on I think track 22. Varese replaced it upon request, however the score is out of print.

Also JOS records which used CDs manufactured by PDO UK, started bronzing rendering some discs unplayable. Its not exactly a mastering problem, but a manufacturing error. Anyway JOS replaces the CDs free of charge, if you mail them your defective discs.

I have several hundred classical discs and have never had a faulty one, apart from two identical CDs being in a 2CD set on one occasion several years ago.
I'm getting frustrated with the number of faulty soundtracks. In addition to several of those listed above, I just bought Tamara Drew that is faulty (a missing track with the space filled by a repeat of earlier music!) and while it's good to see faulty CDs being replaced without quibble by honorable labels like Kritzerland and Intrada, we mustn't forget the faulty CDs that continue to be sold by others to unsuspecting customers despite faults being reported, like the recent Greystoke with it's incompetently mastered end-point that has the CD player shutting off before the music has finished.

Well of course this is hardly limited to JOS. As far as soundtracks go, I believe some Unicorn CDs fall into that category as well. (All bronzed discs were replaced by the pressing company up until a couple years ago...alas not any more)

Yes, PDO was the manufacturer at the heart of the bronzing problems. Labels like Hyperion were particularly badly hit.

The reference to East of Eden in this thread reminded me about this. Does anyone recall what the problem was with this disc? I received a copy with one disc inside and another in an envelope taped to the front. I assume the disc in the envelope is the replacement.

Didn't know there was an error with 'Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome'. Were Tadlow replacing the discs?

Can't find any previous discussion about it.

I think, though I may be wrong, the first presses of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdrome had a track break between tracks one and two, which was not what James wanted, so they repressed the first disc. At least I think that that is what happened.

Santa Claus: The Movie (Henry Mancini) - Singular Soundtrack / Quartet

I still haven't received my replacement frown

Don't forget:

The Last Castle - Jerry Goldsmith

Which was repressed to correct some crackling sounds, similar to the original CD of The Edge. The UK market got the corrected discs straight off the bat.

Doctor Who Series 5 - Murray Gold

Which is being repressed to correct a glitch on "I Am The Doctor" (disc 1)

Dune - Toto

I can't remember the exact error off the top of my head, but a replacement was done.

Clash Of The Titans - Laurence Rosenthal

I think there was a whole track missing.
