The recording credits of the FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING report both the London Philharmonic and The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra..... but which cues were recorded with the New Zealand Symphony or the LPO????

At this page (http://www.lordoftherings.net/legend/interviews/howardshore/) Howard Shore says: "There's a large section of the first film, when the Fellowship is in Moria, that was recorded in New Zealand with the New Zealand Symphony. We assembled 60 male singers who sang all the Dwarvish chants, and that was quite inspiring."

So the cues that features the New Zealand Symphony are "12 - A Journey in the Dark" and "13 - The Bridge of Kazad-Dum"? Anyone here knows exactly?
And in the COMPLETE RECORDINGS boxset?

Thanks....

Certain cues had to be recorded by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in order for the film to be previewed at Cannes. Later, once the post-production process was officially underway, the film was re-edited to such an extent that most, if not all, of the NZSO performed cues were re-recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra to match the new timings of the scenes in question.

A few tracks on the original single-disc OST for "The Fellowship of the Ring" are alternates, and one of those, 'The Breaking of the Fellowship', is indeed the version originally performed by the NZSO (however, the one in the 'Complete Recordings' box set is the film version performed by the LPO). 'The Bridge of Khazad-Dum' might be as well, but I can't confirm that.

The New Zealand Symphony version of "The Breaking of the Fellowship" was the version heard in the Fan Club credits.

I just did some more research, and the NZSO recordings were retained for the 'Mines of Moria' sequence in the finished film. However, it would appear that the alternate 'The Breaking of the Fellowship' recording I mentioned (as performed by the NZSO) is heard during the extended fan credits on the DVD of the film. Of course, this version may also be the one which appears on the single-disc soundtrack release (as I earlier claimed), but not having the DVD and the CD in front of me presently, I can't make the comparison.

EDIT: I see that 'Swashbucker' has already corrected me.

Yeah, but I'm not clear on the where the new recordings of the Moria stuff begins.

There's so much music in that sequence that the performance probably alternates between the two orchestras. But we're agreed that at least 'The Bridge of Khazad-Dum' is definitely performed by the NZSO in the film, as is the alternate of 'The Breaking of the Fellowship' heard during the extended DVD fan credits.

To my knowledge, all of the Moria music (ca. 20 min. in length) that is heard in the extended version of FotR -i.e., from when the Fellowship enter the mines to Gandalf's Lament- was recorded in New Zealand.

It's also possible that some of the early stuff that's featured on the newly released Rarities was recorded there. Maybe Doug A. can chime in?

As far as I am aware, all of the Moria music was recorded in NZ with the exception of some EE inserts for 'Moria' and 'Gollum' and the final orchestral cue that follows Mabel Faletolu's vocal.

Hot dammit, Jim! big grin

I was about to write an addendum that "Gollum" was likely a later addition, but then didn't. I *knew* it would bite me in the ass in a speedy fashion!

The Cannes footage also includes a number of other scenes, such as some Shire stuff and a montage of footage from all three films. I believe that the NZ recording of 'The Breaking of the Fellowship' may have been used for some of that.

Would the Doug Adams book, Music from the LOTR, contain that information—what cues were recorded; and when and where there were recorded?

I'd like to know that, too...

All I want to know is in the complete recordings if any of the tracks are not what's credtied. Would be nice to actually have proper people credited, but it seems to be a silly thing that no one does when releasing film scores.

nice to know that there are other people who care about the same things wink
the liner notes in the complete recordings are great but there's always something that's missing...
