Since this thread was bumped, I would just like to say that I've since seen the Charlton Heston Treasure Island because it was released on DVD, and it has no eclipsed the Disney version as my favorite adaptation. It is quite superior in most regards...with the exception of the music which I agree does grate after a while in its repetitiveness.

....I like it very much, but the score by one Paddy Moloney is neuter. It is not memorable.
'...ONE Paddy Moloney ....'. That's like saying 'one David Bowie' or 'one Beethoven, whoe'er he might be ....'
Moloney is just the single most world-famous Irish folk performer from The Chieftains, whose adaptations graced Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon' etc.. And we're talking real stuff, not Enya in a nightie.
I haven't seen that one, but it looks interesting.

I absolutely have to disagree with you, Richard. The full score is actually a personal grail. The film is hands down the best telling of Treasure Island ever made. It's a damn travesty that it's not released on DVD.
The music is brooding and does a great job of capturing the period. They released some of the music on The Chieftains album "Film Cuts," but there is a lot missing. It needs the complete treatment.

I've seen that poster before and Chuck's holding his cutlass the wrong way round, with his knucklebow nowhere near his knuckles. That'll be the graphic designer's cock-up.

Dear all,
in many respects, R.L. Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND is the quintessential pirate story. Or it is to me, at least.
Yeah, it's one of my favorite books, too. In fact, it's been done on film and TV many times, yet, ironically, it would still be a novel I'd consider adapting for the big screen. I just have a lot of passion for the project, and if I were producing/directing movies based on books, it would be among the top four books I'd consider. While the caveat is that it's been done so often, I think it can still take one more (stunning and awesome, of course) adaptation.

The Nicholas Dodd scored TREASURED ISLAND is very good. The score that is. I haven't seen the film and it might not be a TREASURE ISLAND adaptation and hence the 'ed' at the end or 'treasure' .
But the score is a rousing, nautical, Korngold-esque work. Easily one of my favorite scores in the last 15 years.
