Am I the only one who likes this great score?

I love it. Goes great with McNeely's SOLDIER and THE AVENGERS. What a time period for him. Three great scores, three terrible movies.

Virus is filled to the brim with pulsating action cues, and a piercing amount of percussion -- enough to rattle your spine. No real cohesive theme is present, but at 50 minutes on disc, I think the score works very well as an "album."

Great album. I bought it when it first came out after hearing it on Thaxton's Soundtrack Cinema back in the day. Sure, it's derivative, but of good things. A little Goldsmith here... some Williams there... that monster-attack motif from Debney's The Relic? Sure, why not. But it's all so enthusiastic and entertaining. Love that cool little theme that pops up in Another Ship then just disappears from the score. And that workout the brass gets in Anchor's Away. And if all movies this bad had end credits music this good, I'd be going to the theater a lot more. This one's in my collection to stay.

Same here. big grin

I agree. Overall I think the movie is quite fun, to me it's one of this movies which is so bad that it's actually good or something. I love Sutherland's role in the movie. big grin
But one thing's certain the best part of the music is definetely the score. While I don't care much for most of the action music in the movie (it seems very generic) the piece near the start from the movie where they find the ship is indeed really great and the same thing applies to the end credits music which is one of my favourite End Credits pieces ever. It's just a totally stand-out piece. Great work there by McNeely.

I just picked this used copy up for $4.35 at a specialty store in New York City. I haven’t seen the film nor heard any of the music before, but, just so that this purchase was not a complete blind-buy, I checked out the album via my portable CD player.

When I heard the first track, with that Russian flavor, I was hooked. One track has some influence of Silvestri and another track has some Christopher Young influence. The album is a fun listen if you love big primal orchestral music. I will definately be playing this CD over and over.

I might just check out the movie, however bad it may be, just to hear how much music that wasn’t on the album.

Another vote for this score - it's a good one, yes!
Ah, McNeely was such a talent, one of my favorites back then! He emerged as one of the greatest and most accomplished new voices 20 years ago with "Young Indy", "Iron Will" and then the jaw-dropping "SW:Shadows" that I'd bet all my money he would become something like what Giacchino is today - alas Hollywood became a hostile place for symphonic guys like him...

About six tracks or so are real stand outs.

I regret not buying this, I did hold it in my hands when I saw it in a CD store back when it was newly released. I decided to buy something else that day but I will get it some day.

During the 90's, McNeely was the best at retaining the influences of the temp track (from various composers) while yet make it cohesive and great fun to listen to smile

Yea, agreed with all of this. There's "generic" action/horror stuff aplenty here but there's also lots of good stuff. The end title cue alone is worth the album purchase. It's just awesome. I love how the last two minutes or so of that cue cycles through a couple stirring heroic themes that aren't heard, nor even hinted at, elsewhere in the score. I guess McNeely just decided to take the opportunity to write a mimi-symphony for himself there!

But then again, many of his scores had terrific end title cues: TERMINAL VELOCITY, IRON WILL, SOLDIER (best cue from that score and absent from the Varese CD), SALLY HEMMING, etc.

I also love that motif in "Another Ship" - I wish it was explored again elsewhere, it's a great and very memorable piece. I liken it as a cousin to Goldsmith's similar heroic theme in DEEP RISING.

Any other fans?

We definitely need an expanded or complete CD version
of Joel McNeely's SOLDIER.

This is such a great brassy militaristic action music score with so much
important music left out of the Varese CD album to meet the 30min limitation.

Especially the complete Prologue music is worth to be included and also some
high-octane militaristic action cues throughout the movie - I am waiting for this ...

Maybe Varese will do a Deluxe Edition CD in their Club line some day.

Hey Galipolis, you should post that same message on the older threads for Soldier - additional bumping can't hurt, right? smile I, too, would love an expanded Soldier - desperately needs more attention!
