There's a Laurie Johnson DVD too, he produced it for release with his Noises in the Head book in 2003. A Royal Philharmonic Orchestra concert featuring his and many other works (Big Band primarily).

Not sure if it's available separately from the book.

Oh and a terrific Michael Kamen DVD from 1999 that's well worth seeking out on the Pioneer label.

It features his Concerto for Saxophone and is cleverly directed with footage of him conducting the National Phil and David Sanborn, coupled with footage of Kamen's family interpolated with various impressionistic visuals of birds, London and oceans.

There are interviews too with the late great maestro alongside his daughters, which are ever more poignant for obvious reasons.

I always enjoyed the Sax and Guitar concertos, very accessible non-high brow concert music and his unique compositional stamp is written all over it, so if you like Michael Kamen seek this DVD and each Concerto CD out, you'll not be disappointed!

Very comprehensive list. Thanks!

The other documentaries that I can remember are:

- the Jerry Fielding piece on the FSM CD "The Getaway"

- a long documentary (2 + hours) called "Compositerus / Réalisateurs: Dialogue Impossible?" that is part of the book "B.O.F. Musiques et Compositeurs du Cinéma Français". It features lots of interviews with French musicians and directors and, sadly, only a couple of very short film clips. It does not have subtitles and one must be well versed in French to understand the whole deal, which does get tiresome by the end. Still, it is nice and features Desplat, Coulais, Legrand, Bolling, Sarde, Cosma and several others.

Strange that there haven't been any official DVD's of documentaries on John Williams yet. Several programs, interviews etc., but nothing that has had an official release. Unless some of those Boston Pops thingies have been released?

You're absolutely right, Thor.

It is very sad that there is no official DVD with John Williams's concert or stand-alone documentary even though many of them have been broadcasted on TV around the world, for example excellent BBC specials on TESB and ROTJ, PBS Evening at Pops concerts, etc.

Wonderful idea! I have only some of these on VHS and DVD and will be using this guide to fill in my collection.

Music for the Movies: Joseph Kosma (VHS 1996)

I'm curious about this one - is it really part of the same "Music for the Movies" series that had "The Hollywood Sound", Delerue, Takemitsu and Herrmann? I couldn't find any info about it after Google'ing.

Also, I assume you're not listing some of the Philip Glass programs (like "Glass: A Portrait of Philip In 12 Parts") or Quincy Jones (i.e. "Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones") because these guys are not known primarily for their film score work, but have certainly contributed to the field.

I have a (taped off of PBS' "Great Performances") airing of "John Barry: Moviola" but I was surprised it was never issued on VHS/DVD. Barry mentions it briefly at the top of http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/features/barry.asp , as well as a BBC TV documentary (not sure if that came to fruition).

Also, an addition:

"Film Score: The Music of The Movies" (1986) hosted/conceived by Tony Thomas. http://lccn.loc.gov/91705105 (they list 1989 with a question mark, but the copy of my label bears 1986). This had a commercial VHS release on the Silver Mine label. A copy appears on eBay once in a blue mine.

Several years ago I started a petition on JW-Music.net about making a documentary about John Williams:

http://www.petitiononline.com/jw79mc32/petition.html

The thing didn't catch a lot of attention of course (online petition are useless, but I was still young and naive back then smile), but I still have an email I received from Nick Redman back then where he told me he and Mike Matessino tried to get Williams to do something like this in the past, but apparently the Maestro doesn't feel comfortable to do a full documentary about him. Also, you have to go through his people at his agency and they're notoriously VERY protective about him (and rightfully so, I'd say).

The only way to have a feature-lenghth doc about Williams is if someone very close to him wants do to it: I guess Steven Spielberg is the only one who could be able to do something like this while JW is still alive and kicking among us.

There was supposed to be a Williams documentary in the "In the tracks of..." series mentioned above. However, that series seems to have come to a halt.

I have added them to the list.

Thanks! Your year seems wrong for "Film Score: The Music of the Movies", though - "(VHS 1995)". My label reads 1986. The 1995 might've come from you copying another listing as the "template" line.

Thanks, Trekfan. Corrected.

BTW I have added Symphonic Gundam concert, Tan Dun documentary and new category "Non film music concerts" containing some new additions with music by Tan Dun and Philip Glass.
I have also moved Morricone's "Here‘s to You" from concerts because it is actually documentary containing scenes from some Morricone's concerts around the world.

Does anybody now about anything what is missing?
Please let me know.
Thanks a lot.
