AND...Has anyone ever released the music for the 60s shows "The FBI" and "Wagon Train"?(Not the horrible synthesiser versions on one of those "tv hits" LPs...)

No soundtrack, but at the time of the show's original network run (circa 1969) Grusin released the main title theme on a 45rpm single. The flip side was Grusin's theme for IT TAKES A THIEF. If I'm not mistaken, I think this was released by Decca (?). OOP now for 40 years and very hard to find.

Thanks quiller...I thought as much. I really enjoyed "Name" as a kid...great soundtrack. There was a similar style of theme for a show called "Search" which I thought was excellent at the time. OOPS! I'm showing my age!!!

Grusin's Decca 45 for "The Name of the Game" was No. 9-32413. The theme was also released on 45 by Derry O'Leary on UNI 55121. The only LP that I'm aware of on which the theme appeared was "TV Thrillers" performed by Johnny Gregory (under the name "Chaquito"). That LP has recently been re-issued on CD by Vocalion.

I'm not sure where you are located, but you can buy from SAE with confidence. They are eminently reliable. Since the Vocalion CD is from Britain, perhaps a European vendor might be more to your liking.

Aside from recent TV theme compilations on CD, Bronislau Kaper's theme from "The F.B.I." appeared on two LPs--one by Hugo Montenegro (RCA 3540) and one by Ray Martin (Camden 927).
Jerome Moross' original "Wagon Train" theme appeared on a 1957 LP (Mercury Records SR 60179 ). The LP has not been issued on CD.
The theme has been re-recorded for many LPs, and most recently for a Silva Screen CD (Silva America SSD 1049 / Silva Screen FILMCD 161 / also available as a download from Amazon Digital Services):

I LOVE SEARCH!!! One of my favorite tv shows from my childhood, which has seemingly disappeared from the face of the earth. WB owns the rights to Search, but stupidly consigned it to "overseas only" syndication hell for eternity. I seriously doubt this great series will ever get released on dvd. I'm just glad another fan in Australia had the good fortune of recording the entire show way back in the late 70's when beta and vhs first hit the scene. That's the only way to aquire dvd copies of it. Great theme by Dominic Frontiere!

I loved it as well. It ran here (Australia) almost simultaneously with the US release and I had a great time watching in when I was a very young teen. For me, the main title theme always represented, I dunno..."high-class chic". I liked all those shows that travelled to far away glamorous places like Monaco, etc.

I totally agree with you, Stroppy. The syntheizer version of "The F.B.I." on "Television's Greatest Hits Vol. 1" is one of the all time worst!

"Search has an interesting history. It began as a television movie called "Probe." Here are the main titles for the TV film:
When it was decided to convert the film into a series, NBC found that PBS was already airing a weekly program called PROBE, so the series was dubbed SEARCH, and when the TV movie re-aired as the pilot of the TV show, the credits for it were shortened and redone to use the SEARCH title, as in the version seen here:
And here are the main titles for the regular weekly series:

While it might not be 100% faithful to the original (what re-recordings are?), Gregory's version is excellent and entirely within the spirit of the original. As indeed are most of his tv themes. I would suspect that if Grusin himself ever heard the John Gregory arrangements of The Name of The Game and It Takes A Thief, he'd be very pleased.
