I have to say that I'm a die-hard "Columbo" fan, but OnyaBirri's comment has made my day. Of course, there are many episodes that have a totally different plot, but for many cases the description holds true. And this comment doesn't make me enjoy "Columbo" any less. It's really less about the plot line than the character Peter Falk has created. I'm not too happy about the 1980s episodes, but enjoy most of the 1970s episodes (even though I've seen some of them dozens of times).
It's really odd that none of the "Columbo" music has yet been officially released. I sure hope that somebody will sometime take the challenge. One of the oddest "Columbo" musical moments I remember is happening in the episode "A Stitch In Crime": one of the mystery cues is used as a lounge source cue during a cocktail party. It doesn't get any better than this

I love Columbo and have been watching it on a loop recently. The music is great. So many different approaches over the years, and I love lots of neat directorial flourishes and editing, like when Robert Culprit backhands a lady and she bangs her head and dies. That sequence I'd so well done.
My favourite episode is the Spielberg one. Jack Cassidy is my favourite Columbo villain. So smarmy, it's great to see Columbo take him down.

That must have been "Sex and the Married Detective" from 1989. Patrick Williams, a regular composer on the latter seasons, composed this gorgeous saxophone theme. Perfect match for the show's murderer.

I just wanted to chime in and say Patrick Williams is actually a composer who worked on both the original run of Columbo episodes in the 70s as well as the reincarnated show which started in 1989 (four episodes of the old show and five episodes of the new show). He also scored two episodes of the in some ways Columbo-inspired detective show Monk in 2003 (no idea why regular composer Jeff Beal didn't do them).
I think Williams and Dick DeBenedictis may be the only two composers to work on both incarnations of the show. DeBenedictis scored a whopping 15 episodes of the original show starting with the season 2 premiere, and 8 episodes of the new show. (I think he may hold the record, and a lot of his scores for the early show are pretty darn excellent.)
I also wanted to bump this thread because I'm hoping we get a two disc season 1 Columbo scores release (as I outlined above) this year.

Unlike LLL, Intrada really doesn't like to do box sets. I think volumes similar to Battlestar Galactica would be more likely, or possibly by season like Buck Rogers. I haven't figured out yet how later seasons work out (I suspect some would only require a single disc, or perhaps two seasons could be combined on a two disc set.) I just know season 1 complete scores plus the two more lengthy pilot scores all fits on one two disc set.

I think this went unnoticed here: obviously some of the recent Australian DVD/BD re-issues of Columbo have isolated score tracks (some with fx) - perhaps the Japanese BD releases as well?
Maybe this is the best option we are going to get - since for sure no label can release ALL the music...

Oh, sure a label can. Just start with a volume every six months, a two or three CD set, and work their way up. Until either the studio isn't interested anymroe, or the label head finally dies.
