Thanks, V. A quick search seems to suggest it may be on the endangered list.

Hey Varese! Thanks for the heads up on how many copies you were down to. When were you going to let us know?

Yeah, Varese! You only had this available for, what, five years?! That is no way enough time to decide to pick this up! We need cattle prodding, dudes!

Because there is a 4K restoration of SPARTACUS coming out later this year, with most probably a restored soundtrack, could it be that Varese is trying to get the rest of these sold before announcing a new, more affordable edition in a few months? Something to ponder, while you hold tight to your wallets.

Good, maybe we'll get the 72.40 stereo CD released on its own now. There is the new super-doper restored Blu-ray being released this year, it would make sense to release a soundtrack CD at the same time.

Ah, Rory beat me to it.

Hopefully. I refuse to pay that much for one score, regardless of quality.

Is it sold out, or is it just out of stock again? DMD?

It's now back on sale again, according to the Varese website. I wonder why the site previously read SOLD OUT. It seems clear they can't let the box go for any less than $88.00.

Jesus! Who was asleep at the wheel? I thought it was gone for good, but not before I unnecessarily shelled out $112 over at SAE. F$$K!!!!!!!!

The score must surely have meant something to you to have forked out for it. Regardless of what may come out in the future, the Varese Spartacus box sets the high watermark. If you don't open it and keep it sealed, the value of that set may fetch a pretty penny in future. That's what I would do. The Varese long version of The Great Escape seems to be premium value all the time, in comparison. Think of it as an investment.

Even for $88. I want the ghost of Alex North to appear and air conduct every time I play it. For me there is no single film score ever recorded worth more than $50. Even then there may only be 1 or 2 worth that much.

Oh, I love this score and would have bought it years ago, but my financial situation has suffered greatly in the last two years, so only the essentials. Fortunately, I had a little extra money to part with. I just wasn't expecting to part with that much on one item. I'm definitely looking forward to it. However, I am extremely attached to my soundtrack albums and despite the fact that i could make a small fortune selling half of my collection, the Spartacus box set and the hundred others I own will not be leaving my side until I am well into my 80's.

Yes, looking at ebay I see someone's asking $60 for a sealed copy, but why would anyone pay that? The Intrada three disc set is still in print (complete original score plus album version), & it's only $20! Mind you, I suppose you can ask what you like for it, selling it is another thing.

I see and understand completely where you're coming from. If I had some extra cash, then placing it on Spartacus at least makes that particular problem disappear, especially when it is unclear just how many boxes actually remain for sale. As time goes by, the difference you must have paid above the current Varese asking price will tend to become inconsequential. Of course, the usual situation is that Varese titles are a bit more expensive when purchased from outside of Varese. Maybe DMD can fill us in with an update?

The 3-fer Varese Great Escape I don't have although I did get the Intrada equivalent. Generally speaking, I would rather go for earlier pressings because if the masters have been handled subsequently they may have suffered wear and tear damage or even have deteriorated in the mean time. I believe I saw this happen with The Sand Pebbles. The alternate main title on the Intrada, which was the one used on the Tsunami as the main title, had suffered qualitatively in the time between the Tsunami and the Intrada. That makes me wonder how different the later Intrada production of The Sand Pebbles compares with the earlier Varese Sand Pebbles. As with all majorly important historical scores, I'd prefer to have both if at all possible.

Edit: The interesting thing about damaged scores is that in some cases they are mitigated by their having been given a new lease of life at the hands of Mike Matessino. wink

The Varese is only two discs, it doesn't include the album version (I have it). And the Tsunami Sand Pebbles doesn't have the tape wow because it was mastered from an old LP (like most of the Tsunami releases).

I'd buy the single stereo CD of Spartacus, but no way would I spend all that money on that bloated box set, but that's an old argument here. Luckily I prefer North's score to Cleopatra.

Thanks, CinemaScope. Do you have the Intrada Pebbles, and if so, are there any noticeable 'state' differences other than engineering choices in the mastering? When the Spactacus box is sold out there will still only be 5000, or less, of them.

Oh yes, & it's a real thing of beauty. All newly remastered by Mike Matessino, & with two CD's of it, all the music. I don't know how it compares to the old Varese Club, as I missed that. The only other version I had of it was a mono LP back in the sixties.

I haven't got the box set but think I'll wait to see if a one or two CD version appears later this year when the new Blu-ray is released. If the box set gets low in numbers I might have to review that strategy.

"Fewer than 35 copies remaining". Did Townson snatch a bunch of boxes and head for the hills?

Funny thread this, as epic as the film whose score it debates. I recommend anyone with a spare 3 weeks to check it out--how involved we all got back then, how important it all seemed...before it faded away to nothing. So many jibes, quips...so much heat we all generated. The surprising thing was that it stayed at a good intellectual level and, with one notable exception, never descended into ad hominem attacks. It actually shows the class of this forum, at least as it was back then. I'm afraid I don't visit often enough now to know if anything's changed.

Incidentally, the 2-CD, $40 reduction some of us hoped was just around the corner never eventuated. So you stuck to your guns, Varese, and shot yourself in the foot.
